With the scanner still offline (hoping to get a new one, possibly as this goes to post), I’m regulated to digital comics (which actually might have been an interesting theme, if most webcomics weren’t posted strip-style rather than a downloadable e-book), and working with that does offer me something I can use. Something that I’m sure will score me at least one vote with the Fight Committee (there’s no official name for those who participate in the posting and voting of FNF). Two words: Zombie. Ape.
The folks at Action Age Comics are heavily motivated by the Silver Age, especially guys like the late, great Bob Haney. In Danger Ace, Ezra hides his race (this being a version of the 40′, I believe) while continuing his mentor’s identity and being a hero for hire. This time he was hired to capture a zombie ape.

Sounds easy enough.
“Smokin’ Joe” Round 2
The Battlefield: Danger Ace #0 (Action Age Comics, released during Free Comic Book Day 2009) “Return of the King”
The Promoters: Chad Bowers (writer), Jerry Hinds (penciler), Matt Helther (inker)
So Danger Ace is hired to get the ape, but now he has a woman (on her wedding day, in fact) to rescue.

Any captions I could put into this fight wouldn’t do the panels justice. Our ape isn’t down yet, though.

That noise belongs to a mercenary group hired to rescue the girl. But Zombie Kong doesn’t like their blimp.

Long story short, Ace gets to the blimp (because there weren’t any choppahs around back then) and…

Of course, destroying the ape wasn’t part of his contract, so Ace isn’t getting his money, but he did save the girl, and the city, and gave us an awesome story, so I think it was worth it. But read the comic and decide for yourself.
