Godzilla: Gangsters & Goliaths #3

IDW Publishing (August, 2011)

WRITER/LETTERER: John Layman
ARTIST: Alberto Ponticelli
COLORIST: Jay Fotos
ALTERNATE COVER (SHOWN): Dan Brereton
EDITORS: Bobby Curnow & Chris Ryall
CREATIVE CONSULTANT: Chris Mowry

Sato attempts to get his son out of town before he makes his big move on Takahashi. However, the Elias call Sato’s bluff, worried that by bringing Mothra into the gang busting game may cause a cosmic imbalance. Sure enough, Godzilla arrives in Tokyo, and Takahashi ends up getting his hands on Mothra’s caretakers.

What they got right: Godzilla finally has a featured appearance, although now that he’s here I have to remind myself that even in the movies there’s often a good reason to hold off of bringing in the big guy. I may have been too harsh on Layman previously if that’s what he was going with.

What they got wrong: This is a tough one for me to judge. I like that they’re using Godzilla in a different kind of genre (yakuza film?) but since I’m not into these kinds of stories, I can only say the art isn’t to my taste. I can say that this issue felt kind of short to me. I finished it by the end of my first bowl of cereal, when a comic usually lasts until I’ve had my toast, too.

Recommendation: We’re now at the halfway point of this miniseries and I have to admit at the very least it’s a fascinating take on the Godzilla mythos. Definitely worth a look.

I like this series very much. You’re right, it flies by fast, not surprising when monsters that can’t talk get a couple of big panels and splashes each issue.

And I especially liked the mythos-building and why Godzilla finally shows up (not that I was bored with Mothra, she’s my favorite monster of the the zillaverse).
