In this final edition of the anthology we get three tales of the Rocketeer. These are straightforward Rocketeer stories, no gimmicks, but they’re all very good. There’s also a running theme where a bulldog is nearby them for some reason. I don’t remember them owning a bulldog, but I sadly haven’t read all the Rocketeer stories.

The first story is the most relaxed. “A Day At The Beach” sees somebody stealing a surfer’s prized skateboard. Not much to say otherwise without ruining the story other than Dave Gibbons gave it a nice ending and Scott Hampton had the best art of the issue.

“Waterlogged” is the second story of the book, with Joe Pruett on story. Tony Harris is the artist, with JD Mettler on color duties. A day at the park is ruined when a Japanese boat (remember, this was just before WW2) pops up near the shore. Decent story, but it includes a moment that makes me question what Cliff sees in Betty besides her being smoking hot. (Maybe that’s it, actually.)

“The Flight of the Aeronaut is the second story in this mini-series to have an evil Rocketeer. Not that I’m complaining, since I like the Rocketeer having some guys to fight on his level. Or in this case a girl, who steals Peevy’s plans for a new pack for the Nazis. John Arcudi wrote this story, which takes up half the comic, and I think it works. Brendan McCarthy on art and Jamie Grant on color give us a nice design for the Nazi Rocketeer/Aeronaut. It’s a better design than the thief with the helicopter pack last issue.

Overall, a good issue to end on, although I would love to see them continue this series. There were only a few misses, and most of the stories have been enjoyable. Think about it, IDW. I think Dave Stevens would be proud to see his legacy treated so well.
