Aston Kutcher did bring some changes to Two And A Half Men.

Total reboot here. Ronnie Raymond and Jason Rusch are two high-school teens from different social circles. Ronnie’s still a jock and Jason’s still a whiz kid, but he has a chip on his shoulder. He also has something that bad guys want, and that something turns the duo into Firestorms, and they aren’t the only ones. They are, however, merged into another being called Fury!

What they got right: In concept, this is an interesting idea. Two kids given powers going up against bad guys. Ronnie and Jason feel like characters (although they could use some work), and they have some potential as the series goes on. I do like the new outfits, although they feel like only part of the original Firestorm costume, which I suppose is what they were going for.

What they got wrong: This doesn’t feel like Fury of Firestorm, a comic that does for teenagers what Shazam!/Captain Marvel does for younger kids. It opens with a rather violent scene that kind of bothered me. While I like the concept of Ronnie and Jason merging, Fury is a horrible design and I’m hoping that’s just the result of merging when they don’t get along, with the “true” Firestorm appearing when they work together. Nothing about this series feels like the original characters, to a point where I felt I like I was reading something that was Firestorm in name only. Ronnie’s dad is now a deadbeat dad, but his mother is alive. Professor Stein is dead (allegedly) and Jason knows him. While I don’t know a lot about Jason’s history, I’m willing to bet they got some of this wrong as well.

Recommendation: I didn’t pick up the Jason Rusch Firestorm comics because it didn’t have Ronnie and Professor Stein. I learned later on that this was a mistake on my part, so I really wanted to get into this comic. Really, it isn’t a bad comic. It’s just not the Firestorm we know and love, or the one Conway and Milgrom created. It’s very much a re-imagining and reboot, and I don’t see myself getting this comic past the first arc. It’s interesting enough for me to finish, but they’ve got some work ahead to keep me on this comic.

Why Jason's BBQs never acquire a crowd.

  1. Early Jason!Firestorm was pretty rough, but after they settled down a bit, it got pretty darn good. I admit to cheering in a very fanboyish way when Ronnie finally showed up. (it… makes sense in a very comic-booky way) as well as when Stein returns.

And you’re right, this is a reboot as Stein had already been long away from earth as the elemental FS when Jason joined the group. So he didn’t get to meet Stein until after he was FS.

Although… see there was some bad continuity gaffs between Jason/Ronnie after Blackest Night, and it was one of those that finally made me see why some people complain about Geoff Johns.
