Superman #2

DC Comics (December, 2011)

WRITER/BREAKDOWNS: George Pérez
ARTIST: Jesus Merino
COLORIST: Brian Buccellato
LETTERER: Carlos M. Mangual
ASSOCIATE EDITOR: Wil Moss
EDITOR: Matt Idelson
SUPERMAN CREATORS: Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster

Whatever it was that attacked Superman, the military scientists are pretty sure it’s not from Krypton. That doesn’t stop another being, one that Superman can’t see or hear but everyone else can, from attacking the Man of Steel. Luckily, our hero comes up with a plan that allows him to win the day. Meanwhile, a homeless man enters the hospital where a survivor from the first battle is and both speak the same language as the fire creature.

What they got right: We finally get a look at the new suit in light (granted, he has to go inside a building, since stuff still seems to be happening at night) and it’s about as good as this silly design is ever going to get. The story continues to intrigue, with the mystery of who these creatures are, where they came from, and why they’re after Superman continues to deepen.

What they got wrong: NOTHING about this story couldn’t have been done without the reboot, save a few moments between Clark and Lois that neither adds nor detracts anything from the story. This is how Superman should have been written all along!

Recommendation: While the reboot/relaunch/rewhatever is still useless, at least we have a writer who understands what a Superman story should look like. Unless you’ve decided to boycott the New 52, I say get this comic.

WARNING: The Best Scene nomination contains spoilers.
