The Transformers #12

With Jetfire under Buster’s control, the Autobots hatch a plan to rescue Optimus Prime. However, Buster is knocked unconscious when Jetfire’s auto-programming defends against a human Air Force team and Buster ends up the Decepticons’ prisoner. Meanwhile Soundwave finds the bugged phones at the Aerospace plant, and Shockwave uses it to lure the Autobots into a trap using a fake Optimus Prime head. However, Buster awakes in time to use the Creation Matrix to have Jetfire punch Shocky (another Friday Night Fight entry) and take off with Optimus’ real head, leading to Optimus taking down all of Soundwave’s team and later Shockwave himself and later reclaims the Creation Matrix.

What they got right: The final chapter of this arc comes out fighting. Fake Optimus versus the Autobots and then the real Optimus versus the Decepticons are both cool fights in their own right.

What they got wrong: Maybe it’s a case of biology versus technology, but Optimus had to transfer the Matrix to Buster via the terminal but here he just opens a telepathic link to get it back.

Other notes: The last we see of Gabe and Ferdy ever is when they lead the revolt. The Witwickys make their last appearance until issue #31. We sadly never get a moment where the Autobots apologize to Sparkplug for their treatment of him in issue #4.

Recommendation: A great wrap-up to the story arc, worth checking out if only for the Optimus kicking tailpipe action.
