Today’s Comic> Cyber Force Vol. 4 #1

Maybe it’s because I’m coming off of vacation but I don’t have a joke here.

Before I get into the review, I haven’t followed this series or the revival, so I didn’t know about the Kickstarter or any of that. Apparently you could get a free comic if you bought the digital version, which is something of a reverse, isn’t it? I did not get the digital version but I’m guessing my LCS thought I’d like to review it. Eh, why not?

A girl who turns out to be the chairperson’s daughter is on the run from her mom’s own soldiers–or is she? During her escape she comes upon Cyber Force who isn’t happy to have their enemy’s daughter in their midst but one of the members helps her escape–“off-screen”. She ends up in the hands of the guys she was running from, a rogue faction who plans to wipe out the world.

At least that’s what I think is going on. Breaking format, I really and not in tune with what’s going on. While the coloring looks painted there’s some actual lineart here that helps give a bit of emotion to the characters and I can visually see what’s going on. It’s the story that has me confused. As a jump-on point I didn’t feel it did a good job, if that was the intention. They introduce the characters fine enough, but the world they live in is foreign to me and even a few paragraphs at the beginning of the book would have helped. It made it tough to get into, and according to Silvestri in an interview in the back pages, this is supposed to be a “total redo”.

Recommendation: Cyber Force has never been a comic that interested me (although I did have a comic idea in my youth with that title that was totally different from what I can tell of this series) and that hasn’t changed. On the other hand, I didn’t think it was a bad comic so you’ll have to judge for yourself.
