He-Man and the Masters Of The Universe #4
DC Comics (January, 2013)
“Cauldron of Doom” WRITER: Keith Giffen PENCILERS: Pop Mhan & Philip Tan INKERS: Pop Mhan & Ruy Jose COLORIST: Lee Loughridge LETTERER: Saida Temofonte COVER ARTIST: Dave Wilkins EDITOR: Michael McCalister
It’s Evil-Lyn’s turn to plague our heroes as Adam and Teela land on her island domain. Also there, and just as amnesic as the rest, is Man-At-Arms, although Teela is bringing back hints of his past self. Evil-Lyn puts our heroes to a “battle each other to the death” situation, only to have Zoar knock Adam into the burning pit below. Also, Skeletor keeps Hordak’s head still alive in his possession.
What they got right: The story is still holding my interest as we learn more and more about Skeletor’s situation even if we aren’t learning a lot about what he did. The art continues to impress.
What they got wrong: Are they going to go through each and every Heroic Warrior…sorry, Giffen appears to be using the more recent updated cartoon’s idea that they’re called the Masters of the Universe rather than the title referring to everyone. I never cared for that, either. Anyway, I would like to see the others with their memories intact as Stratos, who is supposed to be a king himself, tries to rally them in He-Man and Man-At-Arms’ absence. Plus I’d like to know what happened to the King and Queen. Please tell me they weren’t killed off. I know that’s the kind of thing DC likes to pull off nowadays but I really want to see that here.
Recommendation: There are no stand-out moment for a Best Scene nomination, but everything works well and I’m still enjoying the story. Give it a look.

I did like Issue #4’s story, and I’ve been very impressed with all the artwork in this 2012/2013 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe comic book series. Evil Lyn is delectably evil in this issue almost to the point of being so in a pleasingly campy way. The only thing I wonder is did Teela have to be in a bikini in this whole issue? I saw more cleavage and booty in this particular comic book issue #4 than I’ve ever seen in any other He-Man/Masters of the Universe comics whether it’s the mini-comics, 80s DC MOTU comics, 80s Marvel comics, 2000s Image MOTU comics, or the Thundercats/He-Man comics of 2016/2017.
