Transformers: Robots In Disguise #14
IDW Publishing (February, 2013)
WRITER: John Barber PENCILER: Andrew Griffith INKER: Brian Shearer COLORIST: Josh Perez SELECTED COVER COLORIST: Joana LaFuente LETTERER: Shawn Lee EDITOR: Carlos Guzman
Megatron, in a new body that resembles his classic form (as seen on the cover), leads Bumblebee and Metalhawk into a trap. Prowl’s heel turn is explained (see the analysis section) just before the Decepticons launch a new war upon Cybertron…but he forgot a few Autobots from his experiment.
What they got right: Megatron returns to his classic form. I never liked the new body they gave him, which looked like a combination of his Animated, Bayverse, and Prime forms. I don’t know what he transforms into, but hopefully that’s an improvement as well. The artwork really shines here.
What they got wrong: It’s like every complaint I’ve had (save for “I came into Transformers for a war story, not a political story) is being blamed on Megatron. Prowl (and I think Arcee) are controlled by a new form of Bombshell’s cerebro-shells. He was behind the weird stuff that happened when you ventured past the city as part of a plan to perfect the Combiner process. Speaking of which, look at that picture of Devastator and point out to me where Prowl is. He’s standing in for Scrapper, killed on Earth, but why did he turn Constructicon green and look nothing like Prowl in combined form? And how did he take HOOK’S position on Devastator with Hook in Scrapper’s. I think they’re playing way too loose with the Combiner process here. Oh, and Prowl, the reason Bumblebee couldn’t have known it wasn’t “really” you is because you’ve been written as a jerk since IDW first started making Transformers comics thanks to Simon Furman writing the early storylines. I didn’t see it either until you shot Wheeljack. Oh yeah, they killed Wheeljack as part of the Decepticons’ blood/oil bath.
Recommendation: Most of my nitpicks are fanboy in nature except for Megatron being behind pretty much everything. It’s a well-told chapter and worth taking a look at.

Not really. Well I suppose the Decepticons controllng things again and actually being productive would nice for a change. But this is more or less a nitpick of pretty much any TF incarnation out there from the Prime show to Energon to Animated even. I am not however a fan of Deva-Prowlastator. And look here, next issue Sky Byte returns. The most random. I’m not sure what Barber was thinking when he was trying to assemble his character roster here. “Homage every era to for maximum nerdgasm???”
Its understandable they have Bulkhead in Monstrosity to somehow reference with the Prime/Beast Hunters show even though that incarnation is ending very soon.

The fun part is that there IS a comic coming based on the “Beast Hunters” season, following the Dinobots. I don’t have a problem with characters popping up from other continuities since otherwise we wouldn’t see them again and there are some good ones out there.
