I did see issue #1 but from what I can tell the Matrix version of Supergirl merged with a dying teen named Linda Danvers. In this issue she’s trying put together the pieces of Linda’s life and makes a terrible discovery about the girl whose body and life she now inhabits. Meanwhile, her boyfriend, who drew her towards the dark side, is trying to bring a dark entity into our world and only Supergirl is able to stop him.

What they got right: I will admit that there are some good ideas in this story. It’s certainly a different take on the road to redemption as Supergirl has to figure out who she is, who Linda is, and her place in all this. The series takes a more supernatural route and I don’t know if Matrix has the Kryptonian vulnerability to magic or not. There are some good ideas here.

What they got wrong: To me personally, however, it doesn’t feel like a Superman comic and that’s why I eventually dropped the title before I ever really started getting it. This darker twist may not be a bad story, but it’s not one I’m interested in ordinarily. Using a version of Supergirl makes it more off-putting because, while I respect that they wanted to make Supergirl something other than the teen girl version of Superman, I’m not comfortable with this route.

Recommendation: This really isn’t my kind of Supergirl, but I can’t it’s a bad story, either. There are some good ideas, just not ones I’m interested in. If you like your superheroines on the “Justice League Dark” side of things, this might work better for you than it does me.
