The Essential Godzilla

I think I’ve made clear my love of Godzilla. Between reviewing all of IDW’s run to my first video review being a Godzilla movie, having the King Of The Monsters appear in Jake & Leon three times thus far, and all of the Big G-related articles I’ve written for both BW and The Clutter Reports, that should be clear to you.

I was trying to figure out what to do for the Wednesday old comic review and it came to me that I haven’t reviewed the Marvel or Dark Horse runs of Godzilla comics. So I plan to do just that, starting with Marvel, the first time an American (or as far as I know any) comic starred the boss kaiju. While I don’t have all the Marvel run (and there may be a few Dark Horses I don’t have), I did pick this up, Essential Godzilla, part of Marvel’s line of collected black & white reprints. So with the except of the issues I actually own I won’t be able to comment on the cover and will again be going to the internet for the individual covers. I’m kind of surprised that Marvel was able to reprint these comics, unless their license with Toho is different than the one that keeps Rom: Spaceknight from any form or reprints.

With the exception of lacking color, this is a good reprint, collection all 24 issues of Marvel’s run and while I don’t think it replaces the regular comics due to the lack of color, it’s easily the next best thing, and I would recommend it. This is how I’ll be reviewing all but issues 11, 12, 14, 18, 19, and 23, which I actually own. After that we’ll look at the Dark Horse run, where I’m only missing a few issues. I hope you all enjoy Godzilla Wednesday!
