Scooby-Doo Team-Up #4

A lot of the previous show’s fans run from this one.

Scooby-Doo Team-Up #4

DC Comics (July, 2014)

“Teen Titans–Ghost”
WRITER: Sholly Fisch
ART: Dario Brizuela
COLORIST: Franco Riesco
LETTERER: Saida Temofonte
ASSISTANT EDITOR: Jessica Chen
EDITOR: Kristy Quinn

The gang is called to Titans Tower when the place appears to be haunted. But it’s just Beast Boy and Cyborg goofing around. Then Raven’s uncle, Myron the Mildly Irritating, stops by and lives up to his name, so the gang have to help the heroes shoo him away.

What they got right: Whatever my opinion of the new show, they do capture the show well from the art to the things that happen. You can also make the case that there’s really two separate stories here.

What they got wrong: Sadly, all of that is also part of the problem. It feels more like Teen Titans Go! with cameos from Mystery Inc. The second half doesn’t really need them at all and they’ve apparently been hanging around the tower for days after solving the mystery they came here for. But these are personal nitpicks. From a reviewing position, the Mystery Inc gang feel out of place even in the first story, partly because the both groups keep their art style. They even lampshade that the TTG Robin and the one they used to team up with, including the last three issues, “seem” so different. I would have rather seen the Titans drawn in the style we’ve seen Batman and Robin drawn, and they come off as real goofballs in this series. There’s just a disconnect that makes it hard to enjoy either tale.

Recommendation: The first three issues were pretty good but this one just doesn’t do it for me. It’s too hard to get into this thanks to how different the two styles are. That kept me from even finding a Best Scene nomination, so I guess there won’t be one this week. Unless your REALLY into the new version of the Teen Titans cartoon you may want to skip this one. Scooby fans may not find what they want here.

  1. […] cartoon version rather than the comic version (even Robin was drawn in the comic model outside of the Teen Titans issue), and the Men In Black spoof they went with was as lame as it was […]
