Astro City #13

I think Ross is trying to go out of his way to block any cover gags I might put on this comic.

Astro City #13

Vertigo (August, 2014)

“Waltz of the Hours”
WRITER/CREATOR: Kurt Busiek
ARTIST: Brent Eric Anderson
COVER ART: Alex Ross
COLORIST: Alex Sinclair
LETTERERS/DESIGN: John G. Roshell & Jimmy Betancourt
ASSISTANT EDITOR: Jessica Chen
EDITOR: Kristy Quinn

A supercriminal questioning is “career” choice. A bank teller who is tired of her life and boyfriend. A scientist part of a team exploring Io through another dimension. Another one guarding a gateway to another dimension. These four lives will be touched by the Dancing Master, who spreads love like a virus across Astro City. And this may not be the best thing for the city.

What they got right: Busiek takes a chance on this one. This isn’t the usual people in a superhero world tale, supervillain fighting Jack-In-The-Box aside. It’s close to Twilight Zone, but with a happier and less weird twist…on second thought it’s nothing like Twilight Zone, so I guess I can’t really describe it.

What they got wrong: Wrong is a strong word. This issue is definitely depending on a person’s taste. Like I said, Busiek took a chance and while it scored with me I can see someone reading this and being turned off by how strange it is. Also I’m not a fan of jumping back and forth in events unless time travel is involved and even then I’d like an anchor.

Recommendation: I would say look this over in the store and if it strikes you go for the buy and read the whole thing. It’s different and may not be for everyone but it’s a good story. I couldn’t lock down a Best Scene again, though and there are only two more new comic this week.
