Iron Man Vol. 2 #12
Marvel Comics (October, 1997)
“Heroes Reunited” part 3: “Matters Of The Heart” PLOT: Jeph Loeb & Jim Lee WRITER: Jeph Loeb PENCILERS: Ed Benes, Terry Shoemaker, & Mike Miller INKERS: JD & Homage Studios COLORS: Wildstorm FX LETTERER: Albert Deschesne EDITOR: Ruben DiazI didn’t pick up the first two or the final issue, and since I’m shoving all the Heroes Reborn titles out the door I don’t plan to. I can still mostly tell what’s going on, because almost nothing happens. The “Atomic Knights” sans Doom get together on some space station and try to devise a plan to stop the heralds. This isn’t easy when Banner is still in Hulk mode and he and Thing fight for no good reason. Then the Fantastic Four decide they’ll go out to fight the heralds first. Supposedly they’re dead now, and when Tony goes to check on the recovering Happy real quick Doom attacks the hospital and practically kidnaps him to the SHIELD helicarrier. It seems Doom is also someone who Fury buys tech from and now the Avengers and Hulkbusters are also there…somehow…maybe they were on the helicarrier before? Establishing shots? What’s that?
I know this synopsis is longer than most even though I said not much happens this isn’t a normal review because from here things kind of happen. Liz showed up earlier and Hulk somehow switched back to Banner. Then while Bruce, Doom, and Iron Man are working on the Ultimate Nullifier something explodes for no good reason and Bruce is Hulk again. Galactus has finally arrived and he’s on top of a building not doing a lot so I think they fire the Nullifier at him and Iron Man & Bruce get knocked away somehow while the Avengers fight the heralds and some groups are winning and some aren’t. So Doom gets the idea to use his time machine and go back to where this all began.
So yeah, bad art abounds both in character models and things happening that I can’t follow. When did Wasp put one of the heralds in an iceberg and when could she do that? What exploded and what knocked Iron Man and Hulk away? Then there’s anything I missed in the first two issues but nothing in this one or the previous issues of this comic make me want to go back and get it. Yes, please continue to avoid this series. Your comic collection will be better off for it.
