Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
Well, the crew seems to be getting along, Kirk made peace with the director of the entertainment troupe but not the actor, and the winged horse doesn’t like the metal floor. Some of this may come into play this chapter. At 13 chapters plus the epilogue we’re almost half-way through the first voyage of the original TV crew, and we still haven’t reached the planet or let Koronin do anything beyond win a ship in a bet and name her primate Starfleet. I’m assuming something will happen soon.
Nope, but now we have a juggler. More on him in a minute. This one is more about giving Rand her backstory, and of course it has to be a sad one. I don’t know if the events that led her to join Starfleet a year earlier than she should be able to and get away with it are canon but while I can’t fault the logic it would be nice to see someone in this story who has a happy history for a change. Didn’t someone just grow up with a love of seeing the stars and joined Starfleet for that reason? Will we find out that Scotty had a horrible history that led to him becoming an engineer? (That would explain the drinking anyway.) Otherwise it’s just Janice’s history and Kirk trying to convince her he isn’t the enemy. The actual enemy had nothing to do with this chapter.
We do get a cute moment with Lindy’s dog trainer letting his pets loose on the bridge and why that was a bad idea. Could be worse, Jim. They could be tribbles.
On the other hand, a juggler “magically” shows up wanting to join the troupe. I guess she…well, whatever the equivalent is of putting a “help wanted” ad out there. His name is Steven and we get a twist ending for this chapter. Not that he has an earring but he’s rather jovial…for a Vulcan! Oooh, Spock is…seemingly displeased. We’ll probably find out more next issue as we keep waiting for the ship to finally arrive at its destination in chapter 7.
