Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

We are over half-way through the book and the most exciting things we’ve had are a crazy Vulcan (even by human standards) and mining dirt from an asteroid for a winged horse. Please tell me we’re reaching the planet soon? Don’t get me wrong. The characters and backstories are interesting (although we’ve yet to have a character who doesn’t have a depressing history) but something needs to actually happen soon.
I suppose “action” is a relative definition here. The father of the owner of the ship Koronin appropriated just found out about what happened to his boy and he’s not taking it well. And by “not taking it well” I mean he’s got a group together to wipe her out to hide his son’s shame. Interesting culture, Klingons.
Back on the Enterprise, Stephen is getting on what passes for Spock’s bad side and Lindy telling Kirk she’s falling for emotional experience hunting Vulcan isn’t making the captain’s day, either. (Although it is weird seeing Kirk being passed up for someone else. You wonder if McIntyre didn’t do that on purpose.) I guess we can assume they’ve been traveling for a while since otherwise she flipped for him rather darn quickly. Also, Cockspur is mad Lindy won’t schedule the Hamlet death scene he’s doing with Sulu as the finale and is on strike. Yes, end the escapist entertainment with something depressing. Cockspur may know Shakespeare but he knows jack about vaudeville. (Granted, very few do in the future, which is rather sad.)
So, there’s your action (unless your Kirk, then there won’t be any action this story). At least we have something resembling a build-up. Everybody is heading for the Phalanx. There are only a few chapters left, so let’s get there already!
