Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.
It was nice to see people at least attempting to get along, McCoy finally showing up, and the Enterprise under way. However, this is only chapter 5 of 13. We still have time for things to go horribly wrong.
The main focus of this chapter is the debut of Janice Rand as Kirk’s yeoman…and one huge walking nerve. Seriously, she makes me look outgoing by comparison. Still, I kind of like her in part because I know she’ll get better. Also, she’s rather good at future Photoshop as she helps Lindy with the posters for the troupe. We don’t get any backstory of her just yet but she isn’t the social type and waking the captain two hours before breakfast wasn’t a good idea. (Kind of like me, really. If anything he apologized a lot sooner than I would. I’d apologize but it’s not a good first impression by either party.)
The other big detail is the first time Kirk and Spock play chess together, but there’s not much to say there. Also, nothing on the Koronin front. I kind of missed her this chapter. We also had Gary finally wake up, which was good, and the first meeting of Spock and McCoy, and they’re on each other’s nerves already but there are some attempts to get along, just not at the same time. It’s mostly firsts in this chapter, which made it a fun read. Next time we’ll see where things develop in chapter 6.
