Godzilla #20 (Marvel)

If I were really continuing the Basketball theme this week I’d be reviewing the Charles Barkley crossover.

Godzilla #20

Marvel (March, 1979)

“A Night At The Museum”
WRITER: Doug Moench
ARTISTS: Herb Trimpe & Dan Green
COLORIST: George Roussos (I’m back on the black & white until issue #23)
LETTERER: Elaine Heinl
EDITOR: Allen Milgrom

Finding Godzilla is easy as more of the shrinking gas puts him now at 20 feet. The Godzilla team tries to lure Godzilla to that museum lab anyway, but it makes news and catches the attention of Reed Richards, who thinks he knows how to deal with the monster. Unfortunately he brings the Thing and Human Torch along and of course that leads to the rock man and the kaiju king battling it out inside the museum, the issue ending with Ben punching Godzilla into a live shark tank!

What they got right: They’re in New York so involving at least one of the Marvel superteams based there was inevitable and when it comes to fighting monsters the FF are usually the ones you call (although like the Champions they invited themselves).

What they got wrong: I’ve only been to New York once and that was a school trip aboard a ferry and not a museum but why is there a live shark tank?

Recommendation: I wouldn’t call this a must read if not for the fact that I know what’s going to happen next issue and this is the setup for that part of the story. So it’s worth picking up.
