Superboy #7

Saviors of the world…and none of them are old enough to drive.

Superboy #7

DC Comics (August, 1994)

“Menace 2 Societies”
WRITER: Karl Kesel
PENCILER: Tom Grummett
INKER: Doug Hazlewood
COLORIST: Tom McCraw
LETTERING: Richard Starkings & Comicraft
EDITOR: Frank Pittarese

(continues from Worlds Collide #1) As the tidal wave continues to head for both Metropolis and Dakota, heroes on both sides of the dimensional divide try to stop it. Icon shows up to help Static, Rocket, and Superboy but Rift decides to treat him like a plaything and he starts to see BOTH worlds as fiction he must have created. (I know a certain “Brother” who would object to that thought.) Superboy tries to stop Rocket from attacking Rift and she gets him caught by Rift instead. Static tries to convince him not to flood out Dakota but Rift responds by turning the flood into a wall of flames, which may have killed Aquamaria as she and Brickhouse seem to be the only ones willing to help Superman save Metropolis. (I like them.) For some reason Flashback’s powers aren’t working. Rift then freezes the wall to decide his next move, believing only one reality should be allowed to exist. As the kids continue to attempt to free Icon, Rift turns them into a single tombstone! (continues in Hardware #18)

What they got right: Until that one part, Superboy and the young Milestone heroes actually work together. I like seeing heroes team up instead of fight each other. Aquamaria and Brickhouse, as I said, are the only members of Blood Syndicate I don’t want to swat with a newspaper since they actually want to be helpful instead of complain that they have comics based on this world (I still hate that, by the way).

What they got wrong: The letterer (or team) goofed on Static’s word balloons. From what I can tell, when Static powers up his voice takes on an electric (static?) effect. As I recall this is never reflected in the DC parts of the crossover, and it was missing from the later show as well.

Recommendation: Finally this crossover is getting into gear. Pick them all up because they’re all important but I’m glad we’re finally getting this thing going properly.
