Darth Maul seems to be to the Prequels what Boba Fett was to the original series, a character so popular that his death was undone so they could give the fans more. For Fett it was in the novels, while Maul got to come back in official media, namely the Clone Wars and Rebels animated series and from what I hear the Solo film. It turns out they planned a video game that would focus on Maul’s fall to the Dark Side. Whether or not that story would have clashed with the origin we’re given in The Clone Wars I couldn’t say.
