Subversion is one of the newest crazes in storytelling. Subverting expectations generally speaking isn’t a bad thing. Rian Johnson, who did it all wrong for The Last Jedi, did it right for Knives Out, as The Closer Look explained in a video I posted in a previous daily short. However, doing something for the sake of doing something is never a good thing and rarely successful. Author Caroline Furlong posted a video from YouTuber The Literature Devil going over The Last Jedi‘s subversion failures but the reason I’m linking to her article rather than just posting the video here directly is that she also goes into her own thoughts on how to and not to subvert expectations, using cooking as an example. So you get an article and a video link all in one shot and I recommend both.
