Chapter By Chapter (usually) features me reading one chapter of the selected book at a time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as a read-along book club.

This chapter and next chapter are just barely long enough to have their own articles. Last chapterS, we saw the lights go out as the hacker hit the power, more proof that someone is behind all this.

I think we’ve reached the part in the book were I run out of things to say to pad out the homepage. I can’t talk about the case here because that’s the point of the book. If someone comes in on the homepage I don’t want to spoil where we are in the book in case they want to go back to the beginning or they haven’t read this chapter yet. I don’t want to be like Variety, whose Thursday headline mailer I have to delete because Wednesday night’s headlines ruined who got sent out on The Masked Singer. My dad and I watch that on Saturdays and I don’t enjoy it as much when I know who’s going home even if I don’t know who is under the mask. “It’s a good performance but I already know they lost.” So hopefully they didn’t say something respond worthy the rest of the day.

So I guess this is enough to look good on the homepage, so let’s get into today’s chapter and see how the case is coming along as well as the power.

This chapter is mostly events. No character focus and it doesn’t advance the case itself but our killer really wants Amanda dead. Whether or not the other two would have gotten the same treatment we don’t know because we haven’t gotten a motive yet. Continuing after the last chapter, and I almost wish I waited until it could be read with this chapter, Kirk is holding a flashlight while the others try to flip the breakers and get the emergency lights going so they can flip the breakers on the main power. That’s when the fire from the end of the last chapter finally catches up to this end of the story.

The rest of the chapter is fighting the fire. We do get a bit about fire being a starship crew’s worst fear because there’s nowhere to run in the middle of outer space, and see what Kirk, Sarek, and Spock put into fighting the fire. They manage to stop the fire, only for it to start up again. My guess is they didn’t quite reach the source and it was able to restart from there. As we leave the chapter ll three characters are burned, Sarek is out cold, with Kirk not sure if Sarek’s still alive, and the fire is still putting Amanda in danger.

Can she be saved? What else is happening besides the patients who can be evacuated being evacuated? Will there be answers next chapter? Join in next time and find out. Or read ahead. I don’t control your life. Just don’t spoil it for the rest of us. Not really a lot to say about this chapter. Outside of the starship thing nothing really stands out and probably wouldn’t under the circumstances.

  1. […] Last time the power was out but now we’ve got fires. Whether that was intentional on the hacker’s part or some side benefit of shutting down the Academy computer we can’t currently say. It’s not like the murderer cares who else gets killed. […]
