  1. Ben Kellogg's avatar Ben Kellogg says:

When viewing “A New Hope” in isolation as ’77 audiences most likely would have, I often imagine Vader’s thought process while spinning through the void. Is he somewhat deeply moved by his master’s sacrifice after the fact? Is he keenly aware that the Death Star planners, assuredly loyal members of the Empire with no ulterior motives (“Rogue One” being deliberately ignored), somehow completely ignored a glaring hole in the superweapon’s design and left it unsolved, or is he just going with whatever the party line is for that sort of thing? If he is indeed aware, how many other “holes” does he notice in Empire life that he can no longer abide by, and is there a possibility of a “revenge arc” where he goes around resolving these issues by, well, “Force?” The logical path all this suggests is slightly more exciting to me than the sequels we got, fine enough all the same, but definitely doing Vader’s character a disservice in their execution.
