This one is more of a curiosity (plus the article I planned for today got delayed and I really need to get this one right) although the story of Tom, everybody’s MySpace friend, is an interesting one. I remember when some of my co-workers used to badger me to get on MySpace (and my account still exists, although the site is now about promoting music creators and all the blog posts I made are now gone), only to join those abandoning it for Facebook, which I initially got on to promote BW. The webseries Today I Found Out chronicles the history of MySpace, why everyone started out with Tom for a friend, and what he did after MySpace.

Here’s an interesting thought exercise for you. I’ve only seen the first two Terminator movies and an episode of The Sarah Connor Chronicles plus Dark Horse’s RoboCop team-up so my knowledge of Terminator lore is limited. The franchise has spawned a few more movies, comics, novels, and video games. The question the writer poses is…can Skynet truly be stopped in the Terminator universe? Head over there and discuss, because posting here won’t be seen by the person actually posing the question and you should read his short thesis first anyway.
I did say this was a commentary in itself.
There are probably more streaming services out there than any of us know about. How many of you heard of Go90 before the Prime Wars Trilogy reviews? Or maybe you haven’t read them and you’re only hearing about it now? Or knew that Shout Factory TV or Pluto TV existed before I mentioned them in the MST3k Turkey Day announcement? I’ve also mentioned Crackle, Sony’s own streaming service, a few times as well as Vudu. The ones everyone probably knows are Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Meanwhile the CW has CW Seed, yet another streaming service in addition to the videos on the official network channel that carries their normal shows. If you’re an anime fan you already know about Crunchyroll, and the VRV service they co-operate with Funimation, who also streams their subtitled and dubbed Japanese animation on their own site. YouTube even streams original content not created by the community via YouTube Red and their streaming TV and movie rental services.
These are just the ones off the top of my head. There are others I know of and still others I probably don’t, and that’s not counting the various TV networks that also stream their shows via their website. Where once streaming was relegated to a handful of sites and YouTube clones (some of…questionable safety) now tons of ad and subscription based services are available. While I’m not convinced cable and satellite are going anywhere just quite yet, many of Millennials and even older generations are just using the internet for their “TV” and movie entertainment. Streaming boxes, Smart TVs, tablets, smartphones, and the computer are the way these people now get their visual storytelling. And now Disney is trying to expand their own service with Fox’s TV and movie library, while DC Entertainment has announced their own plans for a streaming service, both with original programming. Where once Hollywood studios seemed to shy away from the internet they now seem to be trying to utilize it…but are they now going too far the other way?
I’ve already reviewed the first 11 issues but this one got lost in my collection. It’s time to complete this series.

Now it’s just getting stupid! Dynamite is planning a crossover between the classic and rebooted Battlestar Galactica shows in a new miniseries. Why? Even if you like both shows did you really ask for this? Not to mention the classic only fans and re-imagining only fans are only going to like this if it makes the other show look bad while theirs looks good, and will hate it if one is done more like the latter. Could this work? Maybe, but I really don’t care. I don’t want to make the new show look bad and I don’t care to compare the two versions. I have a preference and I’m not changing my mind, and I probably won’t be the only one on either side. Just….why?

Disney continues to absorb other companies and build its empire. First it was Marvel Comics, then Lucasfilm. (Do they own Indiana Jones now, too? All you here about is they own Star Wars but didn’t they buy all of Lucasfilm?) Now they’ve taken the entertainment wing of Fox, which includes longtime movie company 20th Century Fox, the Fox TV Networks, and their portion of Hulu. And since Disney bought Capital Cities, and thus ABC and ESPN, they now own more of Hulu. They have a huge empire right now.
But why did Disney buy Fox and why did Fox go along with it, keeping only their news and sports services? Midnight’s Edge has a few ideas, and I have some of my own thoughts beyond that. And online streaming may play a huge part.
