BW’s Morning Article Link: Modern Doctor Who Team-Up (in comics)

Titan Comics is creating books based on all four of the New Who Doctors. Now they’re preparing a storyline that will feature all four. Since Christopher Eccleston doesn’t want to return to the role (I think that led to The War Doctor in the last team-up) so this is our only chance to see this happen.

Sing Me A Story: Big Iron

Modern country music, while I still enjoy it, takes more cues from pop music, only with more songs about good family bonds between parent and child, and more patriotic songs. Otherwise they have the same themes: love won. love lost, having fun with friends, and not giving up in the face of adversity. Luckily country has no equivalent to Adele. I swear most of her released singles come off as creepy stalker songs. I have to wonder what the record company’s thinking.

In the old days however, country–especially country western–could also tell a strong tale. We saw that with “Ghost Riders In The Sky“, but it could also tell a stronger narrative than one man’s vision of impending eternal torment. For example Marty Robbins‘ “Big Iron”, which tells the story of an Arizona Ranger (like a Texas Ranger but from Arizona; unlike Texas I don’t know if they’re still around) seeking to bring in Texas Red, a killer with 20 men pushing up daisies via his shooting iron. The Ranger carries a big gun on his hip. Who will win this shootout?

BW’s Morning Article Link: The TV Edits Are Coming To Home Video

I have mixed feelings on this one. It probably doesn’t help that allegedly pro site Screen Crush is becoming snarkier than a blog done by a guy in his attic, but it’s an odd one. They’re reporting that Sony is releasing the TV and airline edits of some of their movies to make them more “family friendly”. Hey, even some adults don’t like swears and nudity, and frankly a few movies on this list might appeal to kids. Actually just Spider-Man and Ghostbusters and I only list the latter because they made two cartoons based on the movies, maybe even Pixels because it has cute video game characters and it’s good to warn kids about Adam Sandler early without exposing them to 8 Crazy Nights. But 50 First Dates? Hancock? Actually, the fact that Goosebumps, which is based on books and a TV show FOR kids is on this list just confuses me.

So World War II becomes World War I to keep Wonder Woman from coming of as a ripoff of Captain America to those moviegoers who don’t know comics? Maybe dropping the New 52 sword and shield would have helped?

Surprisingly this isn’t the first time Marvel messed with poor Diana. The infamous “mod” period of Wonder Woman was also in response to Marvel. You know, the “mod years” where the feminist icon was changed to a woman who gives up her powers for a man (who is later killed off anyway), starts a fashion boutique because she’s obsessed with fashion, dates a bunch of different guys, and teams with an old man who teaches her to be Mrs. Peel from that other Avengers all to appeal to the modern woman. Not surprisingly this was an epic among epic fails.

As part of paying homage to a new movie sensation and totally not just to bring in views by discussing the new big name that happens to be part of their wheelhouse (like I’m one to talk), Scott from NerdSync released a video discussing this terrible mistakes made to Wonder Woman at probably the dumbest time they could have, and how Marvel comics was partly to blame. Also Seduction Of The Innocent, which I swear is a coincidence.

BW’s Morning Article Link: War Of The Gods Annotated

War of the Gods (comics)

War of the Gods (comics) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

War Of The Gods is an old DC Comics event in which Circe causes the gods to go to war, with Wonder Woman trying to unravel her plot to put the rest of the world at war with Themyscira. Gary of Crisis On Earth Prime has just finished an annotated look at the miniseries. I haven’t read the event so I don’t know if it’s any good, but at least part of this story (Amazons at war with “man’s world”) would show up again in Amazons Attack, which I hear sucks eggs.
