A Chapter By Chapter Review Special Event

Usually when I do a Chapter By Chapter book review it’s one that I physically own and a work of fiction. This next series of article are neither of these. However, it is a book that I am super curious about as a comic fan because despite not being a comic itself, it’s rather infamous for comic fans and creators.

See, the book has become a sort of boogeyman for the comic book community. It started the crusade against comics that led to the Comics Code, which I’ve already examined previously. It’s why Alfred, loyal butler to Batman, was killed off until the 60s show demanded to use him, and the Dynamic Duo given superhero girlfriends. Some fans will even tell you that it’s responsible for setting the comic industry back by years for daring to consider children as a reading audience. It’s the most horrible thing that’s ever happened to comics!

How many of you have read it?

I haven’t. It was published in the 1954. I wasn’t even born until 1973 and it wouldn’t be until sometime in the 90s that would start reading this kind of non-fiction. I don’t even think the book is in print anymore. But I hear from other people (who probably also haven’t read it) what terrible things it has done to comics. So when I found a readable online posting of the book I figured it was high-time I read it, using the Chapter By Chapter format to go over the book and really examine what was actually said. So for this installment of Chapter By Chapter, the next 14 weeks plus a bonus wrap-up of my thoughts on a book as a whole (that for once will be here instead of The Clutter Reports) will be taking a look at……

BW’s Morning Article Link: *Those* Wrestling Fans

International World Class Championship Wrestli...

The everything for meeeeeeeee crowd has invaded the world of professional wrestling. Not content with demanding all anime be dubbed with inconsistent use of Japanese terms and all the gore and nudity you don’t want an eight-year-old to watch, during Superman into a dark and brooding alien, or attacking any kid’s product they don’t feel manly enough to watch, there’s a vocal group who wants pro wrestling to be treated like a real sport in the hopes that people will stop looking down on them for liking wrestling. Defending things you like or not caring and enjoying it anyway is hard, people!

My fellow Reviewers Unknown compatriot Chris “Rowdy C” Moore has written a post about his problem with what he calls the “smarks” of the internet wrestling community, or IWC, not to be confused with an actual wrestling promotion abbreviation. (I do remember an ICW that later became IWCCW as a kid, but not an IWC.) I think I got out of pro wrestling at the right time. As I’ve noted before (bonus BW flashback link) fandoms ruin everything. Come to think of it, Rowdy inspired that one as well.

Jake & Leon #319: Webcomic – The Focus Group

Children knows what makes superheroes great. Manchildren tend to steal superheroes from children.

If you want to know what makes a great superhero, go to kids. They aren’t cynical, jaded, angry people. Usually. Adults will try to turn them into that as soon as possible and that’s just depressing.

In this week’s Clutter Report I did the rare thing and made a commentary. I usually reserve those for this site, since that’s a project report. However, when my dad got a case for his records I starting thinking about modern media and the resurgence of vinyl records. This commentary was the result.

What’s new to report this week? Nothing except the debut of the next Chapter By Chapter review series. It’s not a work of fiction but I want to apply the CBC formula to reviewing this book, one that’s become a boogeyman to comic fans. What is it? Find out for certain Monday night in the feature spot. Otherwise, business as usual at the Spotlight.

The Many Adaptations Of Wonder Woman

sensation-comics-1Usually this is when I do Saturday Night Showcase, but since I couldn’t make the Wonder Woman Day celebrations near me (stupid allergy season nearly took me out when I went shopping yesterday) I made a last-minute decision. Just like I did when the first Iron Man movie came out, I decided to look at the many different versions of Wonder Woman outside of the comics.

While this is the first time Diana of Themyscira,,,hey, I finally spelled it right! Of course it will still always be Paradise Island to me. That’s what I grew up with when Wonder Woman aired on TV and the comics I grew up with. This may be her first movie but in animation and live-action television the amazing Amazon has still battled evil. Unfortunately I haven’t seen any of the direct-to-video movies except for the adaptation of Justice League: The New Frontier and that includes the animated Wonder Woman movie from 2009. I can only judge her regular TV appearances but I do hope to see that movie someday as well as the live-action one. (Actually, I’m surprised I didn’t see the animated movie on store shelves while shopping yesterday.)

This one is going to be very video heavy (sorry to people on slower connections) and I’m kind of loathe to bring you this first one. There are three Wonder Woman TV pilots from over the years, and this one may actually be worse than the David Lynch one. You have to see it to believe it but thankfully it’s short. Not short enough because it exists, but short.

{HUGE CORRECTION: Not David Lynch, David E. Kelley! And it’s not the only time I make that mistake in this article. Sorry, folks, I goofed. Just when you read “Lynch”, think “E. Kelley”.}

Friday Night PRIZE Fights: For a guy who hates loud noise…

Longtime readers of my FNF entries know that I don’t like using fights where the villain wins. I like to see heroes win, but the villains need at least a minor victory or two so that the hero has a good challenge to overcome, so that when he gets the big victory it feels more earned. (Hear that, Brian Michael Bendis?) But I have to admit this was the best fight of this week’s reviews, even if it does feature Venom with a squished head. Seriously, who created this character model?

“Boom” Prize Fight: “Powerful Punch”

Or possibly “Slam”. I’m not clear on this one.
