Space Usagi Pilot

Usagi Yojimbo

Last week during the Lean Into Artcast co-host Rob Stenzinger mentioned a Usagi Yojimbo action figure from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toyline dressed in a space suit. I had heard about the Space Usagi spinoff series and while I know the figure I’ve always believed it to be connected to that set of miniseries…once I heard about it anyway. The regular feudal Japan version, Miyamoto Usagi (or Usagi Miyamoto if you prefer the English method) had appeared on that and the second series (I don’t know about the current one) as well as in the original comics, which explains his presence here. The Space Usagi toy was just to pepper the line as toylines tend to do late in their life.

I went looking for info on it to show him and found something I wasn’t expecting, a 3+ minute pilot for a Space Usagi cartoon, based on the science fiction take of Stan Sakai’s wandering ronin. It was produced by Fred Wolf Films, the same group behind the first TMNT cartoon. Tonight we take a look at it and try to figure out why it didn’t make it to a full series.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Gifted (X-Men) Trailer Drops

Mythos (Marvel Comics)

Fox is trying to get their own arm of the Marvel universe to television. First was Legion and now it’s Gifted, and here is the trailer. Question: are the TV shows in continuity with the movies? I don’t follow X-Men or the X-titles so I have no idea, but in case anyone asks.

My Favorite Intros: MASK

I’m surprised I didn’t discuss this when I was reviewing the comics. Both the DC and IDW runs have been reviewed (well, part of the IDW run) as well as the minicomics and I never thought to use this as a My Favorite Intros entry. Well let’s fix that, shall we?

MASK, which stands for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand (because we’re spelling our acronym right even if we have to misspell the words it stands for–all hail the acronym all hail) was a toyline created by Kenner (now owned by Hasbro) about a group of heroes fighting the criminal (or terrorist depending on their mood that day) organization called VENOM (Vicious Evil Network Of Mayhem, because Miles Mayhem knew he was the bad guy) using vehicles that converted to battle modes and masks that granted special weapons. The show, produced by DIC Entertainment, ran for two seasons, after a five-part miniseries. And the intro is one of those big ones for us 80s kids. I see it on so many top 80s intro lists and 80s playlists it must stand out for a reason.

I don’t know if the rare likeable member of Jack Kirby’s “Fourth World” saga has made it into the New 52 in the past (now that would be a good escape trick given what the New 52 did to pretty much everybody), but in the post-Rebirth DC Universe Scott Free, aka Mister Miracle, will be making his grand return. ICv2’s announcement includes a preview in which Orion tries to “teach” Scott, only for Barda to remind them who their last teacher was.

Chapter By Chapter: 1st Phase Shifters & The Omega Capsule chs. 14 & 15

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

1st-phase-shifters-the-omega-capsule-chapter-by-chapter

Not a lot happened last chapter. It was mostly our heroes preparing themselves for whatever is about to happen and trying to come up with a way to be on guard without freaking out their human friends. Are they prepared to deal with whatever dark scheme Hoylt has up his sleeve? It’s time to find out.

Chapter 14: The Parade

And when I read it the chapter was so short that I wanted to see where it was going, so I took in the next chapter as well, mostly because I wouldn’t have enough to say in the review of this chapter.

Chapter 15: The Encounter

And for those of you tracking the images, chapter fourteen is a hat with balloons on it while chapter fifteen is a door.
