BW’s Daily Video> Setting The Yasuke Record Straight

Catch more from Metatron on YouTube

For the record, I’d be ignoring this bit of culture war nonsense if they weren’t making and planning fictional works based on this little known historic figure, a trivia footnote in the history of the samurai. This is happening for cultural reasons rather than historic accuracy or good story reasons, so the end product is destined to fail based on recent media failings. It is funny watching the people who complain about cultural appropriation (like in the recent Daily Video where a black girl in a kimono using the word “kawaii” bothered everyone except the Japanese) are now guilty of it with something that actually matters to the Japanese. Apparently they learned nothing from the “black Cleopatra” debacle.

Chapter By Chapter> Star Trek: The Vulcan Academy Murders chapter 27

Chapter By Chapter (usually) features me reading one chapter of the selected book at a time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as a read-along book club.

Okay, we missed some time away from the book due to life but it’s time to see what happens next in our investigation. Then again every time I say that it becomes a character moment chapter, and when I finally just assume it will be character based because the last few have, we get the murder mystery plot. It’s been my only complaint thus far.

Last time we went through two oddly broken up chapters as Kirk goes to T’Pau for a bit of help and they actually get along. That was nice to see.

Look, I’m enjoying the story. I just think the title plot and the plot Lorrah wanted to do should have integrated better. Maybe it’s one of those things I’m noticing more in this format but I do like both plots. Following the events on Vulcan with the relationships would make for a decent Star Trek story on its own, as would the murder plot, and you can weave those together. I’m just not sure the two were integrated as well as they could have. Any other reason to bring the Enterprise here, even sticking with the medical drama (remember, the sequel is a medical drama and I enjoyed it enough to track this book down), would have been enough. We’re in the last quarter of pages so I want to see some more focus on that. Will that happen this chapter? Let’s read and find out.

BW’s Daily Video> The Problem With Spite Storytelling

Catch more from mjtanner on YouTube

This is my problem with Teen Titans Go!. For a show that’s defends itself as being “for kids”, the writers sure like taking shots at fans of the previous Teen Titans cartoon unhappy with using the same resources in a different art and writing style. (“Teen Titans Go!” comes from the theme song and the title of the previous show’s tie-in comic.) You can be subtle in attacking your critics or people you don’t like. Shakespeare pulled it off, but when Roland Emmerich’s use of a Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert is less subtle (and more on the nose considering how he made “Siskel” the brown noser to Ebert’s mayor, when the actual critics argued often), you’re doing it wrong.

Jake & Leon #600> Is It A Milestone?

One benefit of not being married. I never made my wife mad at me for forgetting our anniversary. Still wish I had a happy marriage and kids of my own, though.

Maybe #600 isn’t that big a milestone. Sure, it’s the longest I’ve done any comic thus far, but maybe…nah, it’s me being bad at milestones combined with the temp job helping set up a new store for opening. In this week’s Clutter Report I go into what I can take away from it besides money.

I didn’t really focus on one key aspect of this job. It got me out of the house and doing things. Lately I’ve only been able to go out to shop or visit the doctor. I wasn’t even sure that I could do stuff because I was so used to not doing it, and even the dusting took a lot out of me, though that could just be the mistake of dusting during the part of allergy season that affects me. I did a lot of physical work, which I couldn’t have done after the colon surgery, the hernia from that surgery, and the kidney stones. With all that behind me and the Crohn’s in remission, I was actually able to work on stuff. I have a sense of accomplishment and proof of my limits (and I did press close to those limits near the end of the job) that I can hopefully channel into this site and the articles, comics, and videos I want to work on, as well as the decluttering project. I’ve felt like I’ve been going through the motions, spinning my wheels lately, and now I know I am capable of doing more. That’s why I went with the temp position, to see what I can do. I might go in to help with seasonal work for a little extra cash, but I’d rather be turning the projects into something, even if not directly tied to BW projects.

This week sees me back in action, with the next chapter of Star Trek: The Vulcan Academy Murders for Chapter By Chapter, the debut of the Egyptologist re-imagine of Dan Garrett for the Friday Blue Beetle review, and whatever else comes to mind. I know what I want to do, but even with this renewed sense of work I want to be sure I can deliver on internal promises before I start making external ones, plus who knows what kind of news will come out in the next few days? Have a great week, everyone!

Memorial Day 2024 Tribute: Remember The Fallen

I’m lucky enough that every family member and friend who served in wartime came home…although to be more accurate, THEY’RE the lucky ones. Unfortunately some came home with emotional scars as war is hell. We need to take a moment to thank those who died so the rest of us could live free, and honor those freedoms they fought for. Take some time this Memorial Day to honor the ones who never came home, and thank those that did for their service. Have a happy and safe Memorial Day.
