BW Vs Author Unknown: Is Geek Culture Left-Wing? (part 1 of 2)

click for full-size rant reading

When I took part in the Transformers newsgroups many years ago (surprisingly it still exists) every election year some putz had to post a variation of the following question: are the Autobots conservative/Republicans and the Decepticons liberal/Democrat, or the reverse: are the Decepticons are conservatives and the Autobots liberals. This to me was intended to gauge the political affiliations of the other posters. Clearly you would try to claim the Autobots as part of your political perspective because they were the good guys (unless you were part of that small group that tried to make the case that the Decepticons were the real heroes–I’m totally serious and so where they). First off, my official political leanings…though I have said in the past I’m conservative with a friend claiming I’m closer to libertarian, but I’ve grown to not care about labels in general…are nobody’s business. They do not affect my affection for Transformers then or storytelling today. Plus, for the record, some Autobots would be liberal, some would be conservatives, some would be moderates, and others apolitical based on their tech spec profiles. Meanwhile the Decepticons, embodiment of the worst aspects of humanity as most villains are and a product of the 1980s, would be fascists, tyrants (Megatron’s tech spec quote is “peace through tyranny” after all), and anarchists, punks, and other criminals. It’s one of the worst questions Transformers fandom has had to put with, and they still argue “Unicron Vs. the Death Star”. (Unicron up close, the Death Star far away. Now stop asking.)

I bring this up because political divisiveness in geek communities is hardly anything new, and as politics have wormed their way into every aspect of our lives, especially our entertainment as of late, claiming a hero for “your side” has also ramped up. I see them now and then on various subjects but someone was “kind” enough to spread an image on Facebook bringing them all together in one happy rant of dumb, and all for the liberal side. Admittedly “author unknown” did get a few things right, but he (or she, I’ll stick with he because that’s one less letter for each time I have to write the pronoun so it’s out of laziness really) also got a whole lot wrong. Since I know some responses will be longer than others I’ve decided to break this down into two parts so this article doesn’t run forever. I hate when sites do that (especially the ones just trying to eek out more ad revenue, none of which I currently get) and this intro has been long enough.

One last thing before I get into this: I’m going to attempt to be as apolitical as possible given that this is skirting away from the usual types of discussions I have here at BW Media Spotlight, where I want to bring everyone together to examine the art of storytelling. However, there are going to be points where my political views will show up in the name of clarifying. That doesn’t mean I’m going to immediately disagree with everything here, nor is this about the right-winger attacking the SJW since as I said before there are things the writer got right. It’s the stuff that he got wrong that brings me here today.

The worst part about these poster covers in modern comics is how little many of them give me to work with.

BW’s Daily Article Link: DC Universe Only Streaming Comics

The guy in charge of WarnerMedia wants everything under one banner, which is debatable if that’s a good idea. Now they’re planning to take Warner Brothers’ library of DC Comics-adapting shows and new series away from DC Universe and bring it to HBO Max, leaving the comics as the only reason to go there. At that point you might as well cancel the whole thing and just let sites like comiXology handle their library since I’ll be surprised if they keep enough subscribers there just for that to keep DC Universe going. The movies and shows were what the site was created for in the first place.

Chapter By Chapter> Doctor Who: The Time Travellers chapter 12

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

We’re in the home stretch, the second to last chapter of the book. And thus far, especially in the previous chapter, every answer has been replaced with a question. Our heroes better find the TARDIS and sort this mess soon because time and space are in a kerfuffle right about now.

Everyone has their favorite Doctor, the one that they just enjoyed seeing most. In Classic Who the winner of that race is usually Tom Baker’s Doctor, and he does play an amazing and fun interpretation of the Doctor admittedly. He also had my favorite Companion, K-9. However my favorite Doctor, and I don’t know how he ranks on fan polls, is the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davidson’s. While at time Tom’s is the most fun to watch Davidson’s Doctor is probably the nicest of them all, and I imagine Moffat, also being a Fifth Doctor fan, may have use him as the template in creating the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith, though Smith is a bit more…lively. Doctor Five is less egotistical, a bit more–lacking a better term–human and fallible. He’s right except for the times he isn’t and doesn’t hold the same commanding presence as most of the others, meaning he has to convince people he knows what he’s talking about. He also has the most civilian outfit of the classic Doctors, a Cricket uniform with a nice jacket. He wouldn’t have a normal outfit again until New Who, where they all tend to blend in a bit more in their outfits, except for maybe Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor costume.

And yes, I know David Tennant is married to Davidson’s daughter after she played the Tenth Doctor’s clone daughter. Moving on. Let’s see if anything gets answered without another question. This book doesn’t have much time left, you know.

BW’s Daily Video: The History Of Flash Games

Check more Did You Know? Gaming on their YouTube channel.

I wonder how many of the flash games and videos are being translated to a different format? Some things might be converted and saved but a lot will be lost. Newgrounds is going to be a hard site for fans to travel around soon.

Jake & Leon #469: Reviewing Herodude & Enemies #1

But he forgot to give a recommendation.

And thus we transition back to typical Jake & Leon. Anyone out there want to see another Herodude & Enemies in the future? Anyone out there period? This thing on? Hello?

Speaking of finishing things I finally completed the goal for the email clear-up…though I still have more to do on the “work” side. It’s time to get another project done for The Clutter Reports.

This week comes with a bit of a warning. The next chapter of Doctor Who: The Time Travellers and whatever I do on Friday should be just fine. However, I saw something on Facebook last week I have to respond to and it’s probably going to be a very close skirt to being political. Not completely, and it will be a fine line, but no more than I have before. I like to keep this pleasant for everyone regardless of viewpoints. Examining the art of storytelling is and will always be the main goal of BW Media Spotlight but as politics shoves itself into every aspect of our lives I feel the need to clarify a particular image that has been flying around Facebook about some of our favorite superhero and sci-fi media. It gets a few things right but it gets so much wrong, things I’ve hear wrong for a while now to prove some case and end anything resembling debate (we live in an “agree with me or die” world as of late) and there’s a few things that both liberals and conservatives need to realize before dragging entertainment into something that is not entertaining, namely hatred and compartmentalizing the world. So come into those articles (this is a long commentary on Facebook so it may take two or three articles to get it all) with an open mind and everyone will have their perspectives challenged at one point or another but it’s a discussion I feel we need to have as misunderstandings are rampant. If that’s not your thing the usual stuff is still happening Monday, Friday, maybe Thursday, and the usual daily quickie and comic reviews so there will be some reason to visit here. Have a good week and stay safe.
