BW’s Daily Video Link: Hulk–The Early Years

In the first part of his series examining the early years and evolution of The Incredible Hulk SF Debris’ Charles Sonneberg looks at the first six issues and shows us a different take on the Hulk and Bruce Banner than the more iconic one that exists today. For one thing Rick Jones is still there and he’s never had a live-action appearance anywhere. Since in the past he’s requested not posting his videos to other blogs I bring you a link to the post on his website.

Chapter By Chapter> Spider-Man: Carnage In New York Finale

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Here we are. We’ve come to the final chapter in this book. The villain is defeated but there are some loose ends. How did Mary Jane come up with the money which totally wasn’t foreshadowed at all? What about the vial of Lastofus Juice? Will Peter get back in time to help Aunt May though we already know Mary Jane just did that? Let’s see how this book ends.

Five seconds later the bomb explodes before Peter’s spider-sense could go off.

BW’s Daily Article Link: The Star Trek/Gargoyles Connection

Anybody who knows Gargoyles probably knows that Johnathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis both had major villain roles in the show, but even I didn’t know so many performers from the show either came from the Star Trek franchise or at least appeared on it in some form. Bounding Into Comics lists 10 performers from The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine.

BW Programming Update: The Last Sling

No comic this week as my plans went elsewhere. Part of it includes the records (not the music one) being sorted as mentioned in this week’s Clutter Report. Had an interesting topical one too, though hopefully by next Sunday it won’t be. It probably still will be but I’d like the nightmares to end now. 2020 has been pushing to become the apocalypse we “expected” ten years ago. Or Twenty with Y2K now that I think of it. Oh no, are we going to start EVERY decade this century with crap going on? Anyway, moving on to the update portion.

This week I’ll be looking at the final chapter of Spider-Man: Carnage In New York for Chapter By Chapter. As far as the next book in the series, I have three options and I think, as a test for someday trying Patreon again, I’m going to let you, the BW readership, choose which one I do next. Look for that on Tuesday. I’m not really sure what else is coming up this week. The latest news is mostly behind the scenes stuff and teaser trailers as movie theaters slowly open across the planet (Hollywood seems to care more about the Chinese market than the American one) and death plague restrictions slowly lift. Even my Filler Video offerings are only good for the daily quick post. Don’t worry, I’ll think of something. Hope you all have a good week.

Saturday Night Showcase: Kamen Rider Kuuga

Like with the Godzilla franchise, the Kamen Rider franchise is split into “Showa” and “Heisei” eras. The difference, according to the Kamen Rider fan wiki, is that there are two “phasses” (that’s how they spell it) of the Heisei era and now continues into the “Reiwa” era, all named after the current period of Japan according to the new emperor I believe. (Like England, Japan keeps their royal lineage going but they don’t really operate in government affairs. I think. I’m an American. What do I know?) The Showa period riders are usually the victims of that series enemy, like Shocker in the original series. The Heisei and Reiwa era Riders use either magic or technology but they still use a belt to transform and there’s still at least some connection to the enemy, like in tonight’s showcase, Kamen Rider Kuuga.

This series follows Yusuke Godai and friends as they deal with the Grongi tribe, one of the kabillion ancient races that apparently lived in Japan eons ago. (Seriously, there’s more ancient races and communities in Japanese superhero shows than there are heroes to fight them. Followed closely by the few thousand anti-kaiju organization in the Ultraman universe.) The first episode features how Godai got his hands on the Rider Belt for this series, the Arcle, and the arrival of the Grongi (though in typical Japanese hero (and 90s comics) fashion you have to wait for the next episode for enough backstory to know what’s happening). Enjoy.
