Chapter By Chapter: The Merry Adv Of Robin Hood part 1st ch. 1

Chapter By Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Remember, the book is in public domain. Download or read the ebook online legally and for free at Project Gutenberg, Google Books or the Internet Archive among other sites, or check out the audiobook from LibriVox. You can also use a print copy. In either case my copy may not match up with yours chapter-wise. Follow along with the very-long subtitle. For this chapter:

Part First:

Telling How The Sheriff Of Nottingham Swore That He Would Deal Dole To Robin Hood. Also How He Made Three Trial Thereat, But Missed Each Time By A Good Bow’s Length.

The first three “official” chapters will be under this description. That includes the next two weeks of reviews. I’m guessing each of the three tales will be how Robin Hood and his band dealt with the Sheriff. Remember, he’s after Robin because the man killed his…nephew, I guess. It just says “kin” so I’m not certain. Could be his brother. His drunk brother who challenges younger men and tricks them into shooting at the king’s livestock. The only think Robin did wrong at this point was not standing trial and claiming self-defense, but I don’t think the Sheriff is the unbiased type. Oh, and he also wants the reward, but let’s not forget the revenge.

Also last time we saw various differences to the legend as we know it today. Robin isn’t the betrayed war hero but a wronged commoner whose new role in life isn’t really connected to his downfall. On the other hand, thought the origin of Little John’s name is different how he came to become Robin’s right hand man and future best buddy is still in-line with the stories made today. What will the differences be in this one?

Jake & Leon #420: Back In Time…Again

I kid you not, the guy behind the petition was upset Ghostbusters was getting a sequel and Back to the Future wasn’t.

Yes, I’m running late again, and there’s a storm outside that has already blinked the lights, so let me be quick. This actually exists and I don’t know why. Back To The Future has a definitive ending as a trilogy. Ghostbusters was the kind of story that allowed for more stories. Robert Zemeckis has said the series is done and there won’t be any more stories. Change.org gets used for the dumbest things sometimes, and considering the good some of these petitions at least attempt that’s really sad. I also think I actually used “Back In Time” for a Jake & Leon comic title and forgot when I titled this.

Remember how I was really tired on Friday? I go over it in this week’s Clutter Report as I wash and declutter my car. I think this is my favorite title for a Clutter Report.

More interesting articles and other stuff coming this week. Hope you enjoy it!

Saturday Night Showcase: The Tale Teller (+YouTube Animation Documentary)

We all tell stories in our own way. Most simply tells others about their day, or something that happened to someone they know or heard about through others. The so-called “real” storytellers approach their gift and passion in many different ways. Some make TV shows or movies. Some prefer the prose route or via a video game or audio drama or the stage. I’m one of those who prefers to make comics because they’re more fun for me. Each of them have their own strengths and weaknesses, their own way of telling a story. And yet others go the route of animation. 2D, 3D, stop-motion, pixels, sprites–all different ways to tell a story in a way only animation can.

While Hollywood seems to actively work against animation outside of stories for kids or families, Japan has embraced how animation can tell a tale to people of any age. For other animators the internet has become a godsend, allowing them to tell a story or a joke in a way no other medium or format can. This has benefited all the storytellers, including the medium I wish to work in, but tonight we’re focusing on animation.

Josiah Brooks, better known as Jazza of Draw With Jazza, puts out videos of various art challenges, primarily but not limited to drawing. However, in a recent video he mentioned one animated production that he wished had more views, a short video called The Tale Teller, a story of a man looking to pass on his many stories before he passed on. It’s just under 9 minutes, which is way too short for a Saturday Night Showcase posting, but he followed it up with a series of mini-documentaries about his creative process and the art of animation in the internet age. I will be posting the playlist video so you can just sit there and let all four videos play, but since the documentary has some harsh language and occasional but mild graphic imagery I will also post a link just to The Tale Teller because it is a good video to share with kids. Just ask his son.

Can Old Games Have Great Animation [VIDEO]

I’ll explain why in this weekend’s Clutter Report but as for right now I am very tired. You can’t say I didn’t work hard today. So I hope you don’t mind a fluff piece today.

Animation is important in video games. Bad animation can ruin a game and good animation can enhance it. Dan, formerly of Extra Credits, is an animator and cares about animation in video games. Therefore we have two videos, one on a badly animated sequence in an otherwise good game and a follow up where he responds to one particular response by the game’s defenders.
