Chapter By Chapter: Tom Clancy’s Op-Center chapters 56-58

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

Last week’s bunch of chapters surprised me in that even the Op-Center chapter was fairly decent and moved the plot along. Of course we still had a woman disappointed that the happily married boss is happily married and worried about his son, because we can’t assume the characters will get better, but as Op-Center scenes go I didn’t come out of it sorry I read it. Granted, the interesting stuff is still happening in Korea and I wish it was the sole focus of the book but at this point I’ll take the victories I can.

  • Chapter 56: Wednesday, 2:45 AM, The DMZ: 3 pages
  • Chapter 57: Wednesday, 2:55 AM, Seoul: 2 pages
  • Chapter 58: Tuesday, 1:10 AM, Op-Center: 6 pages

I wonder if this set will match up to the last one or if the Op-Center crew will continue to live down to my expectations?

BW’s Morning Article Link: Jack Benny Drove Speed Buggy

Well, sort of. Mel Blanc, who played the title role in Speed Buggy, was also a regular on The Jack Benny Show going as far back as the old radio shows. In one of those episodes he played a voice that led to Speedy’s classic voice. Also check out Michael Bell’s anecdote about working with Mel and guest Alan Oppenheimer on an episode of the show.

Jake & Leon #401: Another Cat Gag

This wasn’t planned on my part. I just came up with two cat gags in a roll.

I’m not really a dog or cat person for the record. I notice that even people who didn’t like Captain Marvel seemed to like Goose the cat and the gag went from there.

For this week’s Clutter Report it’s just a quick update on the software organizing project. I may have to do one for my dad’s games in the future.

This week I’m hoping to get the video review finished. If I get it done in time we’ll close out the He-Man newspaper strips. If not at least one of them will show up next week, but my goal is to have the video up and scannable by YouTube’s warped Content ID system, fix what I can, and have a premiere on my YouTube channel (just to see how it works since I can’t get people to show up for my streams) at 6 PM and then uploaded live here by 7 PM. If not I have an alternative for you guys and I’m going to be less convinced I have any future with YouTube as far as reviews go.

Otherwise I’ll just keep trudging on, and I may end up with more filler video type posts as I try to focus on the Video Review. I hope all goes well with it, and with you guys.

Saturday Night Showcase: A Conversation With Rod Serling

Nobody in their right mind can deny the contribution Rod Serling has made to science fiction, horror, and the world of television in general. The Twilight Zone is still quoted and beloved to this day even outside of the SF world while Night Gallery, despite not having as much of an impact to culture as the former, is nevertheless popular with fans of the genre it relished in. By using sci-fi and horror as a tool to comment on events of the day and the human condition it was a show that was able to get a message out without turning off people to that message or insulting people who didn’t agree with it for the most part. (Treat someone as a racist and even if they are they’re going to be insulted…more so if they aren’t.)

Through The Retroist I learned of this 1968 interview with Serling produced by the Library Of Congress. In this discussion, Serling and the hosts discuss the state of television at the time, and while he makes a few good points, there are actually one or two I have to disagree with.

BW Episode 1 Review> Young Justice: Outsiders

When Young Justice first aired on Cartoon Network, back before the channel was taken over by someone who only wants to air wacky hi-jink shows that only last around 10 minutes an episode, I very much enjoyed it. It had action, great characters, character development…it was a good show for teens, although clearly not for younger audiences who would either be bored or a bit freaked out. I however am not a younger audience, despite the fact that I occasionally watch preschool shows, so I got into it.

When season two, subtitled Invasion, was also good. While I was disappointed in the ten year time skip it was still an intriguing show that continued the theme of “the team” handling dark plots and conspiracies, only now they had new younger members and still good character development and plot advancement. I enjoyed it and was as disappointed as everyone else that there was no season 3.

Recently they finally released a season three…but it was on their DC Universe streaming site. Not having any money I couldn’t subscribe to it and so I didn’t really think about it much. However, as reported earlier this week, DC Universe is offering the first episode of their original series free for a limited time to help promote the service. This includes the darker and more violent take on the Titans, the slap in the face of the Doom Patrol–I’m sorry, have you seen the latest trailer? I’m not very familiar with the team but are fans bothered by watching Niles making pig noises at one of his heroes who suffers from multiple personality disorder? Is that comedy now? Well, the only DC Original I was interested in was the new season of Young Justice, subtitled Outsiders. I can safely say that everything fans loved about the first two seasons seems to be right there.

So why didn’t I enjoy it?
