BW’s Morning Article Link: Dropping Something Besides The Ball

Fizzbin and Beth discuss the ball drop for the New Year.

What, you’ve never wondered?

This one isn’t story-related but I found it cute. If you don’t want to watch an orb drop for the New Year (actually, this IS the New Year so you missed these events…sorry) you could always try one of these odd little alternatives around the country. Unless you aren’t in the US, in which case there may be one near you.

Chapter By Chapter: Tom Clancy’s Op-Center chapters 22-23

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

A lot of people talk about how they want to relate to the characters, and that is important, although I think I have a better ability to do so than most given I can relate to a dalmatian rescue dog with a bark-activated water gun on his back in a show for preschoolers. However, I tend to look more for characters I would want to spend time with and/or cheer on to victory. I’m having a hard time with some of the heroes in this book on that front. When I’m having a stronger connection to a dead character than the second-in-command of the hero group trying to solve the problem I think something is wrong. Seriously, if Mike Rodgers isn’t fired by the end of this story he better have pulled off something that could only be done if he was there, the psychologist is giving me cause for concern and I’ve barely met her, and I’m not too thrilled about the Press Secretary and I haven’t met her at all. In a different story Paul Hood would be the straight man in a sitcom filled with screwballs. So what’s the page count for the next set of chapters?

  • Chapter 22: Tuesday, 7:08 AM, Virginia/Kentucky Border: four physical pages, three space-length pages
  • Chapter 23: Tuesday, 7:10 AM, Op-Center: ten pages

Almost the opposite of our count last week. Let’s see how worse Paul’s headache is going to be.

BW Programming Update

I didn’t want to add this to last night’s Captain Yuletide #5 article so here’s a separate update post. Tomorrow at this time the Morning Article Links will have resumed. Later today the comic reviews are back and Chapter By Chapter hits its usual timeslot. Friday nights will be another “free day” for now since I don’t have a replacement for the Friday Night Fights or a story bible to review. Saturdays is still Saturday Night Showcase time and next Sunday will see the return of Jake & Leon.

As for this week’s feature articles, I’m hoping to find time to write another movie off of my Finally Watched list and get a Free Comic Inside article out, as we return to Symbion. I’m not sure what else I’ll have, but Saturday Night Showcase probably won’t be a Christmas special. After all, tomorrow starts a new year, and Happy New Year to you all. Hope your 2019 is better than your 2018. I suspect the internet will still be a series of minor wars.  I’ll continue to work to make BW a place to review the art of storytelling to make myself a better storyteller and creator, to commentate on things storytellers do wrong, and promote things I want to see get more attention. There will still be negative reviews, because we still learn from what was done wrong, but we can also learn from what even bad productions did right and I’m hoping to accentuate the positive whenever possible. New year, hopefully new possibilities.

Captain Yuletide #5: The Treemendous Menace

A monster is messing with the Christmas trees and only Touh the elf can become Captain Yuletide and save the day. Just try telling that to his overprotective sister, Missy. Can even two Captains Yuletide and Bryce The Green-Nosed Reindeer handle…”The Treemendous Menace”? Download this year’s Captain Yuletide #5 (in easy to open PDF format) and find out.

Saturday Night Showcase: A Muppet Family Christmas

With Captain Yuletide coming out tomorrow I thought I’d show one more Christmas special from the new Christmas special playlist on my YouTube channel. A Muppet Family Christmas brought together the three big Muppet TV shows as of Christmas 1987–The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, and Fraggle Rock–into a Christmas special. It’s the only time Kermit has worked with the Fraggles and I think the first time he worked with Muppets of both shows outside of Big Bird’s cameo in The Muppet Movie. The special aired on ABC, and this is before they were bought by Disney, who also owns the rights to the Muppet Show Muppets. (The Sesame Street Muppets are owned by Sesame Workshop, still known as the Children’s Television Workshop at the time, and the Fraggle Rock Muppets I believe are still owned by the Jim Henson Company.)

The special finds Fozzie inviting the Muppets from the theater and Sesame Street to his mother’s farm for Christmas, not knowing that she was planning to go away for Christmas and rented the farm for Doc and Sprocket, who were looking for a quiet Christmas. Also there’s a hole to Fraggle Rock in the farm for some reason. (Fun fact: Doc and Sprocket are different in other countries, so their scenes would be more familiar to the kids in those countries, so if this aired internationally they were probably confused.) There are some good stories in there and the usual Muppet hilarity. There’s also a video with the Muppet versions of the Muppet Babies. Enjoy.
