Finally Watched…Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Well, it sure took me long enough but I finally cleared another movie from my DVR. I enjoyed Captain America: The First Avenger. It was a war story but with a superhero. That’s pretty much how the Marvel Cinematic Universe works best: X kind of story but with a superhero. Guardians Of The Galaxy, which I still have to see, didn’t have a superhero but it’s still science fiction tied to a comic book universe so that’s fine. It’s a formula that has brought Marvel Studios success and you can’t argue with the results.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the second movie featuring ol’ Cap, only this time they jumped right to the Winter Soldier. I guess they really wanted to get him into the MCU since he’s a more recent invention, and a darkened recreation of a classic character. Bucky Barnes was Cap’s teen sidekick during World War II, but this was changed in the first movie since sidekicks seem to be on the decline. I blame Rob Schneider for ruining sidekicks…nah, just kidding. I blame grown-ups who hate kid characters or anything remotely resembling them outside of Mr. Rogers and Sesame Street. And even then they have to ruin that…but I’m getting off-topic. So how well did the movie work?

Chapter By Chapter #12 Revealed

While Superman will never leave this site (wait until later this week), it’s time to read a brand new book, and one I don’t think I ever read. When I worked in the grocery store we used to sell books off of a spinner rack or at one point a book rack. Eventually that was phased out, which was too bad because I ended up picking up a few books I might not have. That was back when I had more money than expenses and could afford a few luxuries. Which are now the reason I have a clutter-organizing and eliminating site so in hindsight that didn’t work out so well.

But while The Black Stallion’s Ghost didn’t quite work out for me, it doesn’t mean other books not involving sci-fi or superheroes won’t interest me. The next book in our series doesn’t have any hard science fiction elements, although given what I know of one of the co-creator’s works I’m sure it will at least feature tech slightly more advanced than we had at the time. It won’t have superheroes but it may end up with a few slightly larger-than-life characters. It’s also a book that comes at me with some confusion when it comes to the book’s creation and who did what when. Finally, it is a book where chapters can be as long as five pages or as short as one, which means I’ll actually be reviewing multiple chapters each article instead of one. Otherwise we’d have 88 of the shortest articles I’ve had outside of the Morning Article Link and that would be a waste of all our time and money. So let’s cut through the confusion and check out the twelfth installment of Chapter By Chapter (although “Chapter” will be plural for this one):

BW’s Art Soundoff 2018 #3: Dancing With The Fans

As a reminder, this is the article I was referring to.

Jake & Leon #383: Sparkling Zombies

Then again I had a vegan zombie in one of my sprite comics and don’t like zombie stories anyway, so I’m probably not one to talk.

Disney Channel actually made a teen musical about zombie teens trying to fit in with non-dead humans as part of a story about acceptance and finding your place. I think they missed the mark on that one. I’m expecting this on TV Trash someday because it’s the kind of show Rowdy would do.

Over at The Clutter Reports this week I report on something I did last week, as we cleaned up our dishes. It makes more sense when you read the article. It’s an organizing project.

Nothing new in the comic reviews this week. There’s more Art Soundoff coming and I’m hoping to finally give a look at the new Doctor while doing a Finally Watched. However, life has a knack for derailing every plan I have. However, I can promise we’re close to the end of the story bible for Star Trek: The Next Generation and tomorrow I’ll be revealing the next Chapter By Chapter book, except it will be another “Chapters By Chapters” situation and I’m getting mixed info as to who actually wrote it. So we’ll see what happens this week. Hope you all enjoy it!

Saturday Night Showcase: Art Soundoff 2018’s Other Contributors

I’m not the only person taking part in this year’s Art Soundoff challenge, although judging by the hashtag feed on Twitter, there aren’t that many. I don’t know if people are just not posting the #ArtSoundoff hashtag in their tweets or if the turnout this year is really that low. I’m writing this on the Friday before this goes live so I’m hoping by then I can add more to the BW article that will be on Patreon but as of this writing only four of us seem to be taking part this year and that kind of disappoints me.

For the newly arrived who haven’t watched my videos the past two mornings, Art Soundoff is audio or video blogging challenge where comic creators discuss their art day and things that interest them in the world of indie comic creation. As a media critic as well, I post from the perspective just getting in as well as things that I realize just as a critic or as a fan of the comics medium. My entries can be seen here of course, or on my YouTube channel since I’m one of the vloggers. But tonight let me introduce you (or reintroduce if this isn’t your first exposure to Art Soundoff) to this year’s participants. Hopefully more will show up since you don’t have to start right on November 1st or even do the whole year.
