“Yesterday’s” Comic> Robotech: Academy Blues #0

“I know, General, but your sons buzzing the proceedings with their RC planes isn’t helping make a good impression on our first day.”

Robotech: Academy Blues #0

Academy Comics LTD (May, 1995)

WRITER: Robert W. Gibson

ARTIST/LETTERER: Sean Bishop

Spinning off from Return To Macross, Academy Blues focuses on the cadet years of characters we know from the Robotech saga as they deal with their personal lives while learning to do their part in the Robotech Defense Force. Unlike its parent title the focus here is on character more than action and mystery, but as we go on there will be crossovers between the two.

BW’s Morning Article Link: A Misuse Of Lettering

Letterers are not acknowledged enough in comics. They write the dialog and sound effects you see in comics. Maybe that’s why one letterer (or supposedly an intern) used the opportunity to take a series of popshots at a comic creator he didn’t like by hiding it as an alien language. And you though only video game developers hid things in their code.

Unsuccessful Pilot: The Hero Code

Having been in the reviewing community I became aware of artist and animator Andrew Dickman. He’s done work for review shows as well as worked on television animation, and has done some of his own review work as well as a series of comedy shorts about Doctor Wily and his Robot Masters. Dickman (yes, that is his actual last name) is a huge Mega Man fan you see, even running an annual Mega Man drawing challenge on Tumblr. So when he decided to create a pitch for his own animation concept, guess what he was inspired by.

The Hero Code was a futuristic superhero comedy Dickman pitched to Nickelodeon, which he was working for at the time. The pitch came with a 3+ minute animatic showcasing what the tone of the show would be like. Recently he posted this animatic to his YouTube channel and I thought it was interesting enough to share.

BW’s Morning Article Link: What Comes Of The Disney/Fox Merger

Think about all the work put into those old Disney theatrical shorts.

Now that Disney has added the entertainment arm of 21st Century Fox to it’s evergrowing entertainment empire, what will be the fallout and how much power do they now have? Bleeding Fool’s Jamison Ashley goes over what Disney has absorbed. There is one line I do have questions about though.

However, the deal still needs to complete the regulatory process in several other countries, namely China.

What say does China or any other country have in this?

Today’s Comic> Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #84

My friend Sean was nice enough to pick up issues #s 81, 82, and 83 of IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics to see where the series has gone. It’s one of the comics series I was thoroughly enjoying when I still had money to buy comics and it’s been nice to see the same people involved and still able to keep the story interesting. When you put the right writer or writers on a comic they can go a long time, and 84 issues plus any spinoffs they might have been on (although others usually worked on those) and annuals is very rare in comics today.

When last we left our young altered martial artist reptiles Leonardo had a vision that the Rat King (in this reality a paranormal being devoted to chaos) was about to cause more mischief, which New York didn’t need seeing as it was still recovering from this dimension’s version of the Triceraton invasion. They went to Rat King’s home reality in hopes of finding answers to how to stop him. But while they made a new friend they didn’t learn much. Or did they? Meanwhile, Splinter now rules the Foot Clan and appears to be on the outs with his sons, who remain under the “banner” of the Hamato Clan. And with the Rat King comes a lot more rats and April has convinced Baxter Stockman to use his Mousers to solve the problem as a way of keeping him out of worse activities. When we ended the last issue Clan Hamato was confronting the Rat King just as he was about to “pied piper” a group of orphans off of the damaged bridge. (My dad’s the one from New York so I couldn’t tell you which one.) And thus we enter the final chapter of this story arc.

“Careful, one of these may be our uncle!”
