BW Filler Video: What Is Fortnite?

click the image to go to the Wikipedia page or just watch the video below

I was planning to do the pilot review of the Big Hero 6 TV series but I found out Disney Channel has it up on their YouTube channel, so I’ll be moving that to Saturday Night Showcase and moving my intended Showcase feature to next week. So what to do now? Well, you can blame my friend for that. He’s a school teacher and a lot of the kids he teaches are into this new online shooter called Fortnite. My knowledge of the game is reduced to watch our old pal TJ Omega playing with his friends and a couple of episodes of Game Theory trying to figure out its lore. I was half-lost on that one. So I decided to just type “what is Fortnite” into YouTube’s search and came across this video by YouTube channel I Am Your Target Demographic, who made a video for those who aren’t familiar with the game to learn about it. Good timing.

This doesn’t go into the lore all that much. It’s just a brief overview of what the heck the game even is. So if you didn’t know, now you will, and if you want to know more you can continue on your own. I don’t usually play multiplayer games because I have trust issues.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Mystery Science Comics 3000

And you know you’d buy it just to see how weird it is.

I remember sometime in the 1990s seeing a solicit for a Mystery Science Theater 3000 comic book that never came to pass. Unless I dreamed it. Well, it looks like the current folks are trying again with a new MST3K comic announced, riffing public domain comics. (I heard about it but this is the first actual article I’ve seen about it.) I would love to check that out…if someone at Dark Horse is reading and noting I review comics. Hint hint. Wink wink. I also made the comic above if you ever need a gag page. You just need someone who can actually draw real people better.

Chapter By Chapter: The Death & Life Of Superman ch. 13

Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

I’ve had loved ones passed away. None of them were fighting monsters at the time but I do know the process of arranging things is a long one. Now imagine that the deceased has no relatives (that you know of and the ones you don’t know need to stay in secret and not even acknowledge their loved one died just yet) and it falls to the city that housed you. Especially if you’re a celebrity with no known ties to anyone in particular. I have to imagine this is harder on Lois, Lana, and the Kents. Even Supergirl, who knows Superman also ran around as Clark Kent really only knows him as Superman, so she can openly grieve. Our quartet has to act like it’s not yet certain their loved one is among the dead and only Lois was ever close enough to “Superman” to be able to show the loss of someone she cared about. Everyone else has to fake like it’s only as bad as the rest of the world that Superman is lost. I’m not sure I’d wish that on anybody.

But when you love someone in a dangerous line of work, especially if that involves helping others–police officer, soldier, firefighter, rescue worker–it’s the risk you take. Family has no choice, but friends, boy/girlfriends, fiances, and spouses have that choice and yet all have to make their own sacrifice, worrying every time their beloved walks out the door, will he/she come back again?  Those who can handle the pressure and not get a divorce or break up with that person may well be even braver than the heroes who get the medals for falling in the line of duty. I don’t think they get honored enough. This storyline acknowledges them through the four people who didn’t just know the super but also knew and loved the man. These are the people who make Superman “relatable” and these are the people who should know Superman is not a god, just a man with powers beyond normal men.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Kingdom Hearts 3 Gets A Release Date

Kingdom Hearts wordmark the third game of the series.png

By 0 Noctis 0 – Own work, Public Domain, Link

If you’re waiting for the third chapter (spin-offs aside) in the Kingdom Hearts storyline, you’ll have to wait a little longer. Square Enix has finally set a release date for their mashup of Disney and Final Fantasy characters for next year. But at least you know when it is, right? I haven’t played the games but most of the people I know who have love it.

Jake & Leon #367: Wolverine’s Hot Power

Yes, tell me again how unrelatable Superman is because he’s so powerful.

It’s true. Logan’s back and now his claws can get white hot. How? Why?

“The way I think of it in my head and the way I’ve described it in scripts to Steve (McNiven) is you’ve got a blacksmith who is working with metal on his or her anvil and it can be red hot, yellow hot, white hot, all of that stuff and Logan can do that now. If Logan comes at you and his claws are heated up and blazing you’re in big trouble.”

“I thought this was a real opportunity to do things that would make him feel new and fresh in a way; if you come back from the dead, it should mean something. One of the outwardly physical manifestations of that is that now, from time to time, his claws—once they’re popped—they can heat up. They can get really hot.”

First of all, Charles Soule, if someone who’s virtually unkillable is lunging at me with giant metal claws ready to carve me up, I’m already in big trouble. You really think making them also catch fire is going to make that big a difference? And how exactly can he do that now? His mutant power involves the “healing factor” and claws (the enhanced senses are a byproduct I think and the reflexes come from decades of training a virtually immortal body that apparently now doesn’t even know when to stay dead) so how do you add “making the artificial adamantium coating catch on fire” to that. Or do the bone claws now heat up, and what does that do to the adamantium? Or did he lose that again? They just keep piling on the reasons for me to hate Logan, don’t they?

In happier news, this week’s Clutter Report goes over the next Quick Change combiner team, the tool bots. I have more Quick Change knockoffs but only two more combiner teams so I should be done with this set soon. I am trying to alternate between actual project though.

I’m doing two DC Comics a week between mainstream and DCAU universes so why not give Marvel a brief bonus? Recently I reviewed the MegaMorphs minicomics, based on Toy Biz’s oversized robot superhero toys, but I haven’t reviewed the regular miniseries, which I do own. So I’ll be starting with that miniseries in the Wednesday spot. Also on Wednesday my friend Sean still insists I read new comics, but since MASK and Robotech were both busts he went to another “nostalgia” series that he knew I already liked, IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I’m starting on #80, which is supposedly just after Krang’s trial. All I know from the Free Comic Book Day comic that preceded that arc is that Krang was defeated, Splinter took over the Foot, and Raphael and Alophex are finally together. I don’t know what’s changed since then so if anyone wants to fill in some gaps after the review (I want to see what I can figure out on my own first) feel free to do so.

This will be surrounded by two pilot reviews, Big Hero 6: Baymax Returns and Cloak And Dagger, which will confuse me because I also have the old 80s movie on my DVR with Dabney Coleman and Henry Thomas I’ve never watched completely through so there’s a Finally Watched in the future. The show is a new take on Marvel’s superhero duo but I wonder if we’ll see any actual superheroing in this one based on the trailers. And of course we continue The Death And Life Of Superman on Monday and BW’s Best Friday Night Fights on Friday. Saturday Night Showcase returns, but I’m going to a webseries this time instead of an 80s show. Have a good week everyone!
