BW Morning Trailer: Live-Action Dumbo

Yep, another Disney animated classic going live-action. Has Disney just abandoned what made Disney? Okay, let’s see it.

Is anybody else NOT getting a Dumbo vibe from this movie? What’s it about?

From Disney and visionary director Tim Burton, the all-new grand live-action adventure “Dumbo” expands on the beloved classic story where differences are celebrated, family is cherished and dreams take flight. Circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) enlists former star Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. But when they discover that Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback, attracting persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton), who recruits the peculiar pachyderm for his newest, larger-than-life entertainment venture, Dreamland. Dumbo soars to new heights alongside a charming and spectacular aerial artist, Colette Marchant (Eva Green), until Holt learns that beneath its shiny veneer, Dreamland is full of dark secrets.

So…is Dreamland going to be a stand-in for the Disney parks? Has Disney really lost their way that much? Well, they put Tim Burton on yet another Disney live-actioned not-stalgia production so I’m going to say yes. Apparently we learned nothing from Alice In Wonderland did we Disney?

BW Episode 1 Review: Marvel’s Cloak And Dagger

My knowledge of the Marvel superduo Cloak and Dagger is admittedly limited. I have one, maybe two comics they make a guest appearance in and I know at least one of them isn’t from the main continuity. So I can’t really judge the adaptation quality of Freeform’s new series. I do have to ask, based on episode one alone, if this is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like other live-action TV and streaming shows have been. Freeform is owned by Disney the same as Marvel and ABC, while Netflix was just an arrangement before Disney decided to start their own streaming service. While this doesn’t take place in New York, that didn’t stop Agents Of SHIELD or Agent Carter.

This series is set in New Orleans, or so I believe. Marvel doesn’t have a lot of fictional cities unlike DC so I’d be surprised if they changed that for this show. Still, moving them away from New York, where most of the supers in the MCU still come from, does allow them to develop apart from the others until it’s a good time for them to meet. The show had a two-hour premiere, which I assume means they played the first two episodes, but I only recorded the first one and all of my thoughts are based solely on that episode, “First Light”.

BW’s Morning Article Link: Space Mutiny Rifftrax Tonight

My favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000 target is Space Mutiny, a Reb Brown cheesefest with crazy plotlines and “used” footage from the original Battlestar Galactica. I wish I could go to the movie theater broadcasted Rifftrax redux happening tonight, or even next week’s replay, but hopefully you can. I’d say let me know if it’s any good but I already know it will be. But let me know if they come up with any new good renames for Blast Hardcheese.

Today’s Comics> Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #s 81 & 82

This was the last of the IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics I managed to pick up. So I don’t know what happened between that issue and the two I’m about to review. So last I heard Splinter took over the Foot (but I don’t know what happened to the Shredder), Krang was about to go on trial for all of his many war crimes, and Raphael and Alophex were a cute couple. The last comic I was able to buy before my job loss was issue #37 so if I don’t know what’s happening in these comics you know why.

My friend Sean seems to insist I get new comics even though I have so many of my old ones to go through. Knowing I enjoyed this comic he has offered to grab these issues for me in place of the Titan Robotech comics. I certainly appreciate it and with most of the other titles I was collecting or interested in either ended or in unwelcome hands it was really the only choice left. Apparently #81 starts a new story arc according to his checking so we should be starting off on a good point. For those of you who haven’t been following the series, here’s what I do know.

In this version Splinter and the Turtles are reincarnations of a family of ninjas who broke off from the Foot Clan after Oroku Saki corrupted them. Oroku and Hamato Yoshi competed often but it was Yoshi’s love of Tang Shen that drove the wedge. If memory serves Saki thought she was too positive an influence on Yoshi, who was fighting his own rage issues. Saki killed them all. Later Yoshi and his sons were reincarnated into a rat and four turtles respectively, all part of a series of intelligence-boosting by Baxter Stockman, a greedy scientist working for an alien named Krang who was out to conquer the universe and thus far pretty good at it. One of the lab assistants, April O’Neil, rescued them from a fire but they had been exposed to a mutagen that when she next saw them had mutated them into anthropomorphic ninjas. They made a friend in Casey Jones, had all sorts of adventures, and dealt with the modern incarnation of the Foot Clan, which included a resurrected Oroku Saki, now calling himself The Shredder and in conflict with Krang and his Utroms. There were also gangs, other aliens, more mutations, and a whole lot of action. Now I’m curious to see where our heroes are nowadays. Let’s find out.

BW’s Morning Article Link: It’s Godzilla’s World

What happens when the Godzilla anime movie trilogy is done? According to Newsweek it won’t be a sequel to Godzilla Resurrection (or Shin Godzilla in Japan and, thanks to Funimation doing it wrong, the US) but following Legendary’s example and expanding out their kaiju universe. Does this mean Rodan can finally have his own movie again, like Mothra had her own trilogy? Will Angurius get his own movie at last? They have time to figure that out.
