I spent the past three days lambasting the current state of the DC Universe, including Eventitis and world-destroying. So naturally I’m doing an FNF entry involving just that.

Worlds Collide took place during the “Fall of Metropolis” event I mentioned yesterday, which is odd to have one event disrupt another. Except for today, but DC’s gone event crazy. It was a team-up between the “Superman” family of titles and the “Milestone” imprint. The two worlds are brought together, and the multiverse threatened by…

Government workers will be the end of us all!

…a mailman. Actually, despite any faults, it was a crossover done right. Each chapter of the story takes place in each issue of the comic, with the chapters clearly marked for continuity. While I don’t understand why they decided to this while Metropolis was in ruins, so it’s still a bad idea. The story itself I’m kind of neutral on. But it does give us tonight’s entry.

Now Spacebooger‘s mailman could easily threaten the multiverse.

Round 11

The Battlefield: Static #14/Worlds Collide part 14, the final comic of the event, August 1994

The Promoters: Dwayne McDuffie (writer), Denys Cowan & Prentis Rollins (art), David Montoya (painted cover), J. Scott J. (color assist), and Joseph Daniello (letterer)

So it turns out that Mr. Bentson is actually Rift, a being that can span both universes. Believing himself to be the god of both realities, he decides to either combine them or wipe one out. Naturally, the heroes aren’t really into this and strike back. However, Fred/Rift has god-like power. So when Fade tries to attack Rift…

double ouch

…it doesn’t go very well. Rocket, in her Rift-approved costume, also goes down at the hands of animated statues of the Blood Syndicate. (long story) So who’s left? How about the supervillain Holocaust?

burn

Never mind, then. Looks like it’s up to Static (also in a new costume) to finish the job.

It's like McDuffie was channeling Dan Didio into Rift before Didio even started screwing him over.

OK, so that didn’t work out. But here come Superboy, Steel, and Hardware to save the day.

All he wanted was his costume back.

So Fred Bentson IS Didio?

Well, that’s just how it goes when the villains are in charge.
