Metal Hero

You may know the concept but you may not know it had its own group. Metal Hero can best be described by pointing at Iron Man and say “like that”. Beginning with Space Sherrif Gavan, there’s not much more I can get into in the opener without negating the rest my format.

Defining Characteristics: The Metal Heroes are usually either robots, cyborgs, or guys in armor. They come from space to battle a particular foe (although there may be exceptions as I haven’t been able to follow this genre as well as the others). They have awesome vehicles and other cool gear, and that’s about it.

American Translations/Counterparts: Any comic fan can list robotic, cyborg, and armored heroes (although not all cyborgs get cool armor), so that would be a long list. Saban converted a few of these series into VR Troopers and the Beetleborg series, but they haven’t had a huge showing outside of Japan.

Current Status: While some attributes continue on in other heroes, the “Metal Hero” concept is defunct. This hurt the aforementioned Saban shows as they canceled before they could shine due to lack of footage to use and seriously hurt VR Troopers. The American versions of the costumes were seriously lacking and it required a lot more special effects than they could budget, so the Troopers were never able to defeat their enemy the way the Power Rangers have.
