Doctor Who Vol. 3 #4

IDW Publishing (December, 2012)

“The Doctor & The Nurse” part 2
WRITER: Brandon Seifert
ARTISTS: Philip Bond & Illias Kyriazis
COVER ARTIST: Mark Buckingham
COLORIST: Charlie Kirchoff
LETTERER: Tom B. Long
EDITOR: Denton J. Tipton

Amy investigates why the Silence would cause the London Beer Flood, while the Doctor and Rory continue their crazy misadventures.

What they got right: While part of me really wants to see these tales, I do like that they leave them open for readers’ imaginations, or possibly a fanfic or two. I love watching the Doctor and Rory on their own, and getting to see Amy in action without the two was also good.

What they got wrong: Why DID the Silence agent cause the Flood? Shouldn’t the event have happened without them? It bothers me when science fiction stories strive to use aliens to explain events whose origin is unclear about as much as I do “blaming” our science and cultural advances on space people. Also I’m surprised the Doctor is so willing to leave Amy in potential danger as seen in the Best Scene nomination.

Recommendation: This and the previous issue should have been made into an episode, but with Amy and Rory gone that’s sadly unlikely. Pick this storyline up.

Anyone who read this comic saw this nomination coming a mile away.

I love what this volume of the series is doing, but though various writers are brought on, the Silence thing might actually be a series arc. We don’t know why these agents are involved, but maybe we’ll find out later. The tales ARE modeled on the Moffat era, after all.

I loved this 2-issue story to bits despite the unanswered questions. I think something like this, with a huge number of locations and untold adventures, works a lot better in comics form than similar attempts on television.

    • If there’s a series arc here, I think it’s the “imaginary gentlemen” or whatever he was called from the previous story arc. This felt more like the Sycorax’s appearance in the first ever IDW Doctor Who comic, just there to be there.
