Adventures Of Superman #1
DC Comics (July, 2013)
This print comic collects the digital first anthology where different writer/artist teams can tell their Superman story. I wonder if they take pitches from nobodys? It might be my only chance to write a Superman story without all the reasons I can’t bring myself to work on the official title.
COVER: Brian Hitch & David Baron (at least I think so, they’re listed all three comics but not having followed the digital version it’s guess work that this is one of those covers) LETTERER: Wes Abbot EDITOR: Alex Antone “SUPERMAN” CREATORS: Jerry Seigel & Joe Shuster “Violent Minds” WRITER: Jeff Parker ARTIST: Chris Samnee COLORIST: Matthew Wilson “Fortress” WRITER/ARTIST/CO-COLORIST: Jeff Lemire CO-COLORIST: Jose Villarrubia “Bizzaro’s Worst Day” WRITER: Justin Jordan ARTIST: Riley Rossmo
In the first tale, Superman fights a drug addict who has gained strong mental powers. It won’t surprise you that Lex (the even businessman version) is involved. A good action piece, but there’s only so much you can do with a short story. You can action or character but seldom time for both.
The second story goes for character, told through two kids playing Superman, one having to play the villains. It shows (and at one point outright says) that Superman can handle anything the bad guys throw at it. While having my least favorite art (although I do like the layouts and the way they depict Superman’s superhearing) it’s fun enough to be my favorite story of the trio.
The final tale is not focused on Bizzaro and he tries to hurt people and be a hero. Lucky Superman learns to speak Bizzaro and save the day. Bizzaro is a hard character to write just on concept, if my first sentence is any indication, but Jordan manages to pull it off.
This is a good comic for fans of the non-52 Superman but I wouldn’t mind seeing a few full-length stories to really get into it. This might not be likely given the digital first format but once can hope, right?
Not just you, how about getting this Superman idea from John C Wright into print? 😉

I applaud his effort but there’s a lot of overkill in that idea. Maybe if it was toned down somewhat.

Overkill? Inconceivable!
(I admit, I laughed at John doing Grant Morrison better than Morrison has lately lol)
