Transformers Regeneration One #93

For once the modern cover was better than the classic homage cover. Sorry, Guidi.

Transformers: Regeneration One #93

IDW Publishing (July, 2013)

“Destiny” part 3
WRITER: Simon Furman
PENCILER: Guido Guidi
INKER: Stephen Baskerville
COLORIST: John-Paul Bove
SELECTED COVER ART: Andrew Wildman (artist) and Jason Cardy (colorist)
LETTERER: Chris Mowry
EDITOR: John Barber

The Decepticons prepare the next strike on Cybertron but Bludgeon’s goals may not be Soundwave’s. Under the surface, Hot Rod has a vision when he enters Primus’ chamber, just before he and the Dinobots encounter Grimlock…who isn’t himself right now. Meanwhile, Galvatron prepares to sacrifice Starscream and Shockwave as part of his own invasion plan, but the pair has other ideas…which doesn’t bode well for Ultra Magnus either way.

What they got right: Guido Guidi moves from the homage covers to the inside art and it’s an improvement. While Wildman has learned how to draw Transformers over the years, some of his old issues remain. Guidi’s robots look like robots and not people in costumes. Bludgeon’s motivations are surprisingly interesting, or at least different. There’s also a nod to the end of the original comic. The Galvatron story is also interesting.

What they got wrong: But I’d still prefer them one at a time. I don’t like bouncing between stories,  and I’m betting Simon will be doing that again. Look, I know what’s it’s like to have a bunch of stories in your head and wanting to get them out but for the sake of the readers tell one at a time! Also, I just don’t care about what’s going on with Primus, which is obviously leading to another “mythical” tale for the Transformers. I’m sure Guidi liked being able to draw different Autobots with the same name as Hot Rod/Rodimus (although Hot Shot from Armada is out of place) but I just don’t care about this story. Doesn’t Furman have enough on his plate without another cosmic event?

Recommendation: This is starting to become more readable than More Than Meets The Eye but that’s more Roberts’ failings than Furman improving anything. There are good elements but Furman’s ADD is still in effect. Give it a browse maybe but it still falls short of a fully positive recommendation. No Best Scene nomination, by the way.

do you think this comic will get any better?sure I said the last two issues were good, but primus back after he died in #issue 75?i see a lot of contradictions but simon`s loyal fans don`t question this, plus i don`t really care for rodimus prime, the loyals even boo me out of the posts because I point out all this, the art looks better but storywise someone needs to tell simon to retire.

    • The thing about Furman is that he will get one or two decent stories (I actually enjoyed his Armada/Energon run, the first War Within, and the Matrix Quest arc despite my disagreements with his revisioning of the Creation Matrix) and then things go off the rails almost immediately after. Plus we still have four stories or five stories going on at the same time.
