Transformers Regeneraion One #94

“No parking means no parking, pal!”

Transformers: Regeneration One #94

IDW Publishing (August, 2013)

“Destiny” part 4
WRITER: Simon Furman
PENCILER: Guido Guidi
INKER: Stephen Baskerville
COLORIST: John-Paul Bove
SELECTED COVER ART: Andrew Wildman (artist) and Jason Cardy (colorist)
LETTERER: Shawn Lee
EDITOR: John Barber

Galvatron launches his attack on Ultra Magnus, who doesn’t know Galvatron due to the whole alternate reality thing. (Plus UM never appeared in the original Marvel run.) Meanwhile, Bludgeon continues his assault using his drones and breaks out the big gun, but the Autobots may have a plan to fight back. Blaster confronts Soundwave. Underneath the surface, Primus names Hot Rod the new Prime. (nononononononononononono)

What they got right: Except for the Hot Rod story, all of the other stuff going on has at least a passing connection to each other, which as I’ve stated is rare for Furman. I have a problem with the art as you’ll see but the fights are well done.

What they got wrong: I don’t know how much to blame on Guidi’s pencils versus Baskerville’s inking, but there seems to be an attempt to ape Wildman’s style but only shows part of the evolution he’s made in being able to draw Transformers. Guidi has been able to imitate the later Marvels as seen in flashbacks in the main series and the alternate covers for this one (and like last time this was the cover they grabbed for me) but I want to see him do his own style rather than imitate Wildman’s. Then again, it could be Baskerville “fixing” things on his end, or both. I’m just not into it, and no one panel or group of panels really stood out enough for a Best Scene nomination.

Recommendation: While Regeneration One is at least less disturbing than More Than Meets The Eye, I’m still not going to miss this one, although I would like to at least finish this arc. I’m not sure I’d pick it up again should I gain an income source that will allow me to resume my collecting since I’m just not a Furman fan, but my sheep nature may get the better of me.

    • Fellow Friday Night Fighter Snell has logged his issues, too. Plus I forget who but somebody did a review of an Alpha Flight story he wrote and Furman’s Transformers stories seem almost competent in comparison.

    • After losing my job I’ve had to limit my comic collecting. Beast Hunters is the only IDW TF comic I want to keep reading. So I guess I’m finally out of sheep mode. Regeneration One, More Than Meets The Eye, and Robots In Disguise just aren’t fun to read.

Sorry about you losing your job, hopefully there`s another better job for you out there. As for rg1 you`re not missing anything, the bludgeon war started in #94 ended quick in #95,hot rod became rodimus prime in #0 by touching a matrix from another universe, the monstructor/omega fight didn`t last long,of course monstructor lost, soundwave also lost to blaster, soundwave is still alive though, the warworld was destroyed by the ark, bludgeon was tossed by rodimus from the warworld to the planet below, the primordial creatures helped the autobots defeat the energizer rabbits from bludgeon,so what`s left?5 issues left for jhiaxus ,still a big mess, even in simon`s blog a lot of his fans have backed out.

I enjoyed reading your Regeneration One reviews. You were one of the few reviewers who were completely honest about how bad it was. It was dark, depressing, rushed, illogical and disappointing in so many ways. It’s such a major cluster F’ that I can’t even consider it to be cannon with Marvel’s Transformers. Perhaps someday you’ll review the rest of the issues. I got more satisfaction out of your reviews than I did out of that dumb comic!

I hope that by now you found a good job .

    • Thanks, Paul. I’m glad you liked the reviews. As for finishing the series, that’s unlikely even if I do get some income. I didn’t want to pay for any more issues at cover price and it would be worse at back issue prices. The comic reviews are for titles I pick up for fun since nobody pays me to make comic reviews. I don’t intentionally pick up bad titles. I pick up what I want to read and then the review shows if I was right.

Outside of the current Windblade story (because Marghred Scott won me over with her Prime Dinobots stories) nothing coming from IDW’s Transformers titles interest me. It’s not what I want from a Transformers story and I have no plans of going back without a huge change that would at this stage practically need a reboot or a new continuity alongside this one at the very least. Regeneration One was pretty much everything I hated about Furman’s original run (which I’ll get to sooner than I want in the “Yesterday’s” Comic reviews) made worse and I really want nothing to do with it or financially support. It’s either going away or gone and I hope it stays that way.

Again, glad you liked the reviews I did and I hope you’ll check out the stuff I do.
