Hal Sutherland RIP

I can’t seen to find when Hal Sutherland was born. I do know that word came this week that the last of the Filmation founders had passed away. (Norm Prescott passed in 2005 and Lou Schimer late last year.) Sutherland used to work as a Disney animator but he will be forever known as one of the founders of Filmation as well as director on many of their shows, sometimes a few episodes, sometimes a season, and sometimes a full series.

With Saturday Night Showcase back in action, I’m devoting the rest of this month and all of February’s postings to Sutherland in particular and Filmation in general. The studio gets a lot of flack for the cost cutting reuse of cels and bases but their writing and effects made up for it in my opinion.

To start, we’re taking a look at the one episode of He-Man & The Masters Of The Universe he directed. “Daimar The Demon” finds Orko wanting someone to play with…and nearly destroying Eternia. By accident as opposed to whatever Giffen and DC’s New 52 has done to him!
