Cartoon Network Presents #24
FEATURING: Scrappy Doo
FINAL ISSUE! (oh, shut up; that had nothing to do with it!)
DC Comics (August, 1999)
“Puppy Power!” WRITER: Terry Collins PENCILER: John Delaney INKER: Mike DeCarlo COLORIST: Dave Tanguay LETTERER: Phil Felix ASSISTANT: Harvey Richards EDITOR: Dana Kurtin
Shaggy and Scooby are worn out from a marathon of mystery solving. (I wonder if this during the season they often worked for Shaggy’s Uncle Fearless, but Mystery, Inc is mentioned. Also, Shaggy has a lot of weird-named uncles.) So Scrappy hijacks the pizza guy to investigate a zombie at a house being sold by a famous special-effects man who is divorcing his wife. Together, Scrappy and “Pizza” solve the mystery.
What they got right: I don’t care how many haters Scrappy-Doo has. I like the little guy and this was a case of making a character work rather than parody or slam the character, unlike a certain live-action movie. Scrappy has gotten smart enough to know when to run and when to make a stand and he’s quite the detective. I also like the way he and “Pizza” work together. I’d totally read a comic with these two.
What they got wrong: What happened to Freddy, Velma, and Daphne? If this is “Mystery, Inc.” and not “Fearless Detective Agency” shouldn’t they be there, too?
Recommendation: If you hate Scrappy, you’re probably not going to like this issue. For us Scrappy fans, though, this is a Scrappy we all wanted to see. For them, pick this up.
The next issue changed the title to Cartoon Network Starring for some reason. I think my collection is a bit jumbled but I’m going to see if I can track down the Space Ghost Coast To Coast issues of CNP before I move on.

[…] It may not lead to them liking the character but maybe it would cut down the loathing. I wish that comic the video mentioned had led to a redemption, or Be Cool getting a chance to redeem him would have worked as well. At it […]
