IDW Publishing (September, 2009)
STORY: David Bowers WRITERS: Timothy Hyde Harris & David Bowers ADAPTATION: Scott & David Tipton ARTIST: E.J. Su COLORIST: Tom Smith COVER ARTIST: Barzak LETTERER: Neil Uyetake EDITOR: Tom WaltzRobo-Toby, now going by Astro, makes friends with the kids on the surface and meets their mentor, a roboticist from Metro City named Hamegg. Also one of the kids, a girl named Cora, was also lost from Metro City. They come upon a huge robot that Astro secretly jump starts with his core energy but either that act or being forced to compete in the robot games when Hamegg discovers Astro is really a robot, brings the Metro City mayor and an army to collect the robotic boy.
What they got right: I do like seeing Astro Boy in action in the fight. But before that we see Astro making friends among the kids so it’s sad to see what he’s lost.
What they got wrong: We missed the parts when Cora is mad when she finds out Astro is a robot despite the protests of the other kids. Also, Astro seems taller here than in the previous two issues. The art doesn’t mesh as well with the movie as well as the first two issues.
Recommendation: This is still a good comic alternative to the movie, but you should really see the movie.
