Godzilla #9

Marvel Comics (April, 1978)

“The Fate Of Las Vegas”
WRITER: Doug Moench
PENCILER: Herb Trimpe
INKER: Fred Kida
COLORIST: Mary Titus (black & white reprint used in review)
LETTERER: Rick Parker
EDITOR: Archie Goodwin

Godzilla fights Boulder Dam, and the dam wins, flooding Godzilla down to Vegas, where he pretty much wrecks the place until the rest of the dam breaks and washes him away. SHIELD gets right on his tail with Red Ronin mothballed by Dum Dum.

What they got right: I kind of like the idea of Godzilla running loose in Vegas. We’ll get another monster next issue and while I wish there was one here I’m still amused by the idea. I also agree with Dum Dum about keeping Rob out of the fight because he’s a Godzilla fanboy. As much as I want to side with Rob not to destroy Godzilla there still isn’t a lot of proof he’s the guardian monster of the movies and cartoon of the time period.

What they got wrong: There’s this subplot involving some guy trying to win money for his mother’s operation, which we’ve seen before. Then it turns out she’s been dead for three years and the chump’s delusional. It wasn’t interesting and the end was a bit disturbing, plus it added nothing to the story. It would have been better to leave him out of it.

Recommendation: Honestly, it was slightly amusing but otherwise needless filler that did nothing for anybody. It’s only worth getting if you want the complete series.
