With Leonard Nimoy‘s passing doing some kind of retrospective is kind of a given. However, I already have a lot of catching up to do on recent events and recurring series. Besides, I have few choices. You all already know about Star Trek so there’s no sense pointing to that. There’s Mission: Impossible but I don’t even know what his role was on that show. He did some cowboy stuff that I haven’t seen. I doubt I’d find an episode of In Search Of… that would fit with this website. Transformers: The Movie would be hard to get an embed for and the audio dramas he’s done aren’t online anywhere I can embed as far as I know. And that covers the stuff he’s done that I’ve seen or been interested in. That leaves me with Zombies Of The Stratosphere because it’s been too long since we’ve looked at a classic serial here at the Spotlight.

Zombies Of The Stratosphere is a 1952 serial from Republic, the last of the theatrical “Rocket Men” series. We’ve already looked at King Of The Rocket Men in a series of Showcases and it was…underwhelming. A serial lives and dies by it’s cliffhangers and King really didn’t know how to do it right. “Oh, look, the guy with the rocket pack is falling from the sky. How, oh how, will he ever survive?” Hopefully, this serial will have better luck. Nimoy is one of the minor villains but this is one of his first roles after all. You can’t expect him to have the lead already.

Now instead of posting the episodes individually every day for the next few months (I do want to get back to my own videos) I found a playlist of the serial…for as long as it remains up. So you get it all in one shot. Enjoy.

I liked Leonard Nimoy’s In Search Of episodes where he explored Big Foot, the Loch Ness Monster, and Stonehenge. Because of that show, my interest in the mysterious still continues with shows such as Animal Planet’s Finding Bigfoot. In fact, did you know that the Finding Bigfoot crew had an episode where they were investigating Bigfoot sightings in Litchfield County, and even filmed a “town hall meeting” scene at Crabby Al’s Restaurant in Thomaston where local Northwestern Connecticut people shared their enounters with Sasquatches? I thought it was pretty cool to see Crabby Al’s in my hometown featured on Finding Bigfoot!

    • I never got into Finding Bigfoot. However, I did catch In Search Of when I came across it and there was another show like it called “Secrets & Mysteries”, which was hosted by Edward Mulhare (who also played Devon on Knight Rider). That one was different in that he actually hosted the show from a castle tower or something using various devices to watch the mysteries while playing some chronicler of the unknown or something. It was quite good.
