All I want to know is why Marvel stopped using volume numbers if they’re going to break out a new #1 every two years. Max.
Marvel Comics (Your guess is as good as mine, somewhere in 2010 I think because that’s all I can get out of comiXology and Marvel can kiss my fuzzy fanny with all these stupid #1s. Stop fearing numbers! The speculator market is DEAD AND NOT SOON ENOUGH!)
“Next Avengers” part 1
WRITER: Brian Michael Bendis
PENCILER: John Romita Jr.

COLORIST: Dean White
LETTERER: Cory Petit
ASSOCIATE EDITOR: Lauren Sankovich
EDITOR: Tom Brevoort
Steve Rogers assembles yet another Avengers team, although Wonder Man plans to talk him out of it, blaming the team for the last bunch of stupid events the Marvel universe just got over. Some of the members–Thor, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Hawkeye, Spider-Woman, Iron Man, and then current Captain America Bucky Barnes, is introduced to the new team leader, Maria Hill. As they wait for another arrival, Kang The Conqueror arrives. Naturally Thor’s first reaction is to attack him (not because he’s Thor but because he’s Kang and that’s usually a good immediate reaction) but once everyone meets them Kang is holding a doomsday device Tony designed but never planned to build. This stops the Avengers long enough for Kang to seek their help (because that always ends well). In the future Ultron finally destroys the Avengers and takes over the world, but a team made up of their descendants of the Avengers, all kids, manages to defeat him…and then takes over the world for themselves with no moral guidance. They even take down Immortus and will take out Kang’s timeline, which he’s rather against. Now the Avengers must decide whether or not to trust Kang and whether or not they should do this anyway. And how they would do it since they can’t trust Doctor Doom and Reed is not available. Meanwhile, Kang makes contact with his…ally? Boss? Either way, it’s a smart Hulk and some lady I don’t recognize.
What they got right: The art is fantastic and they made some good choices for the current Avengers roster, including ones not at this meeting.
What they got wrong: I like the Next Avengers movie so of course Bendis is going to ruin it. Time travel is rather convoluted, as the characters note, but considering how many trips throughout time Tony Stark has made over the years both with and without the Avengers, you’re telling me he didn’t develop anything in this area? And do we need the Professor persona of the Hulk again? And what did Simon mean that he’d have to show Steve the Avengers are a bad idea? Did Bendis ruin yet another character?
Recommendation: I’m both curious about what happens next and afraid to find out. Ultimately, I don’t think I’m going to try to find out. I can’t really recommend this story.
