Transformers: Megatron Origin #2

IDW Publishing (July, 2007)

WRITER: Eric Holmes

ARTISTS: Alex Milne & Marcelo Matere

COLORIST: Josh Perez

LETTERER: Chris Mowry & Robbie Robbins

EDITOR: Chris Ryall

Since we last saw Megatron he has become an arena fighter, although he has to get used to killing his opponents first. The fights gain the attention of senator Ratbat but also the Autobot law enforcement group. They open a dragnet hoping to find and stop the arena fights. One group sees them setting up the arena, with the bots we know as Constructicons building the arena on-site. Megatron arrives and is met by Soundwave, who offers new weapons from his master, and rats out the Autobot stakeout team, using his mind-reading powers and Laserbeak to learn about the dragnet. Then Megatron kills the stakeout team.

What they got right: Soundwave and Laserbeak actually do what their tech specs say they do. Laserbeak is used for interrogation while Soundwave does his mind-reading trick. These are rarely if ever used so it was nice to see, and we can presume Soundwave detected the communication between the stakeout and “homebase”.

What they got wrong: Oh look, another Transformers comics in which a robot looking a lot like Cy-Kill is killed off. And it’s by Megatron this time. Yeah, try all you want, Megatron, but we already know Cy-Kill is better at being an evil robot leader than you are. The coloring is too dark and it took me awhile to realize it WAS Megatron in the arena until he flashed back to the mine. And the odd “camera” angles are back too.

Recommendation: I’m still not enjoying this series. Dreamwave did the arena fighter part of Decepticon history better than this comic does, and it’s just not fun to read.

Cy-Kill versus Megatron….now that’s a match up! Has a Cy-Kill looking bot been killed in other Transformers comics (your comment seems to imply this is the case)? Are they any other times where you have detected Go-Bots looking beings in Transformers comics? I like that recent Retroblasting video about the Transformers and Go-Bots. You recommended it on your video. The video was very thought provoking. Also, you (Tronix) have that insightful video on Youtube where you discuss the Transformers and Go-Bots. It’s actually a very popular video. I know it will never happen, but it would be nice to see some Go-Bots comic books get created. The Transformers are cool, however, I find that I like the Go-Bots slightly more than them.
